(Anonymous) 2012-12-07 11:58 pm (UTC)(link)Even people in fields where you don't need to see someone to like their work still often need to be seen. It's good business practice to network and go to events, that means people will know what you look like.
I admit I can understand OP's point of view, I'm an artist who's popularity has been increasing and despite the fact that I try VERY hard to be kind I'm afraid people will see me and use that as a reason to make fun of me. Even as an adult these things still hurt and I WISH I could hide away where people didn't know what I looked like but it's not easy when you are trying to expand your market.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-08 02:15 am (UTC)(link)If you mean events like book signings then you'e already got people who like your work, and most people aren't going to suddenly go 'OMG, EW!' if you don't look how they thought you were going to look.
*Even then, most of the events for writers are usually writing conventions which are *really* not the place to be pushing your manuscript towards anyone.
