Well, considering that te majority of the population doesn't usually learn too much about an author unless their series either gets HP/Twilight famous, or they say/do something really controversial or stupid? I'd say you'll probably be pretty safe anon.

Also, what does your physical appearance really have to do with getting your book published?

+1

not to sound mean, OP, but the chance that you'll actually get famous enough for people to know these things about you is very small.

if you don't want people knowing those facts about you, then don't publicise them.

Also, what does your physical appearance really have to do with getting your book published?

Even people in fields where you don't need to see someone to like their work still often need to be seen. It's good business practice to network and go to events, that means people will know what you look like.

I admit I can understand OP's point of view, I'm an artist who's popularity has been increasing and despite the fact that I try VERY hard to be kind I'm afraid people will see me and use that as a reason to make fun of me. Even as an adult these things still hurt and I WISH I could hide away where people didn't know what I looked like but it's not easy when you are trying to expand your market.

True enough, but the thing with publishing is that, generally, you're going to have an agent or you're going to mail your work into a publisher. Also, as a rule, most people aren't going to openly make fun of you in a networking setting* and well...honestly? Writers aren't exactly known for being the most attractive group of people.

If you mean events like book signings then you'e already got people who like your work, and most people aren't going to suddenly go 'OMG, EW!' if you don't look how they thought you were going to look.

*Even then, most of the events for writers are usually writing conventions which are *really* not the place to be pushing your manuscript towards anyone.

OP might be thinking of Cassandra Clare and the bashing she gets? I mean, she deserves it for being a plagiarist (and a terrible writer), but discussions about her almost always immediately devolve into people making fun of her weight and appearance.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-08 01:07 am (UTC)(link)
But if she wasn't already a plagiarist, no one would think twice about it. Plenty of authors are overweight, and maybe I'm out of the loop, but I never see anything negative about, say, PN Elrod, or Charlaine Harris, or Tamora Pierce's weight, and they are not small gals. But they are awesome writers.

I don't really hang around writing circles but I have witnessed many occasions where even if a celebrity is liked they will get made fun of for their weight.

And chances are even if someone is super nice SOMEONE will not like them, and the weight always comes up.

It's gross but it's something in the culture that appearance always has to be brought up, especially when it comes to women.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-08 02:23 am (UTC)(link)
Yes, but here's the thing - most writers don't have that level of celebrity where it comes up very often. Face it, most writers, even really well known ones, just aren't well known enough by the whole unless they've said/done something *really* stupid [Cassandra Claire and plagiarizing] or manage to hit it as big as Harry Potter or Twilight, just aren't in the public conscious enough for people to really be that aware of them.

For example, Orson Scott Card [and yes, I know his whole thing with homophobia, and yeah it was stupid] is an amazingly well known writer. However, how many people would actually be able to pick him out of a crowd? Or Piers Anthony, who has over 140 published books, for that matter? My point was that the chances that the OP would get famous enough for enough people to actively go looking for photos of them to mock just aren't that good.
