You do realise writing is actually about putting words on a page and telling a story? Because it sounds to me like all you want is to be a celebrity author.

If you are serious about wanting to be an author then congratulations - you've joined the one club where none of that stuff actually matters if you are prepared to do the work.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-07 11:28 pm (UTC)(link)
Mostly I agree with this, but being serious about writing doesn't magically make general insecurities go away. It would actually be entirely understandable for somebody who badly wants to be successful at anything to be afraid of how it opens them up for a lot of attacks on things other than their craft.

I understand the controversy if the author had a reputation for being sucky in fandom before they got published, or if they're E.L. James, but other than that I didn't realize there's a big stigma against people who write both fanfic and original? There are only so many authors who are open about that anyway.

If you publish a book that makes the rounds enough to get a lot of positive or negative attention in fandom, you might be too busy enjoying your success to care all that much. Not that criticism suddenly won't matter at all, but still.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-07 11:25 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't see why anything relating to your personal life would be a problem. Just don't air out your personal issues, such as the lack of boyfriend, in public and people won't know about it. There are plenty of authors that manage that. And you can write fanfiction with a pen name and people won't know it's you.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-07 11:26 pm (UTC)(link)
Fuck 'em all. Write your book and publish it if you want to. None of those things have anything to do with writing ability, and there are plenty of shitty books out there with pretty young skinny people on the back cover.

Well, considering that te majority of the population doesn't usually learn too much about an author unless their series either gets HP/Twilight famous, or they say/do something really controversial or stupid? I'd say you'll probably be pretty safe anon.

Also, what does your physical appearance really have to do with getting your book published?

Yes, people are probably going to hate you. Everyone has someone who hates and/or ridicules them. Fact of life.

But honestly, none of that matters if you want to be an author. I guess if you want to be the kind of BNF/celebrity author like Cassie Clare or S Meyer sure. But even then, haters gonna hate and you've just got to do what you love.

If the mere thought of a few people not liking your work is enough to stop you from being an author, then you don't really want to be an author all that much I guess.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-08 12:05 am (UTC)(link)
Write, and write well. Your personal life and appearance has fuck-all to do with anything.

Also, Naomi Novik and Rob Thurman both wrote fanfic. You're in good company.

And I say this as a former fanfic writer who is now writing original work (mostly short stories, but I have a novel in the can too) and (occasionally) getting it published. My first published story was bought for a penny a word when I was forty-four. So I don't want to hear about your age either. No one cares how old you are.

I've recently bought a real, published book from one of my favorite fanfic authors. Just get out there and write, OP! Hope it works out well for you.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-08 02:20 am (UTC)(link)
And where on earth did you get it in your head that writers are young, thin, pretty and successful people with steady relationships? Do you even KNOW any actual writers?

Most of those factors are utterly irrelevant to getting published. You are trying to get a book published, not become a Kardashian.

I mean I have no idea what Diana Wynne Jones looked like, much less her sexual and work history. How absurd is it to even ask a writer for kind of information? "Hi, Mr. Brin, I really love your books, can you tell me how you lost your virginity and how much money you made a month in 1977? No, I'm not going to kidnap and keep you in a glass cage in my basement!"

(Anonymous) 2012-12-08 07:37 am (UTC)(link)
Worrying about how your looks, personality, etc. will affect you as an author before you're even published is like worrying about paying taxes on your lotto winnings before you've even bought a ticket. Cheer up, OP... it may never happen.

Anon, I share a lot of your insecurities but I think it shouldn't keep you from writing, because all this things might never happen (and if you get famous enough - cheers, you'll probably have enough money and a big enough fandom, that you don't have to care about the occasional hater. Unless you say/write something really offensive, you should be save.)

OT: But more than people bashing me, in case I ever get famous, I'd be worried about people bashing my characters - especially, since my fav characters in fandom tend to get a shitload of hate and to imagine this would happen to one of my precious babies x'''D

(Anonymous) 2012-12-08 10:27 am (UTC)(link)
OP, it sounds like you've been lurking in ONTD posts or something, which are full of a bunch of bitter, unpublished aspiring authors who will mock anyone more successful than them. Don't worry about any of that, and focus all your energy on actually writing, and writing as best you can!

(Anonymous) 2012-12-08 12:50 pm (UTC)(link)
I think people who hate those things are either overly cynical or they really hate those things when poorly written. I mean, I love Harry Potter but hate Twilight, even though they're both YA fantasy.

And honestly, you'll have people who don't have heated reactions to your books no matter what. Just don't get sunken in by the fandom - JK Rowling gave way to one of the most bitter, spiteful fandoms on the internet, but outside of that she's still world famous. She just doesn't pay attention to hp_essays.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-08 09:08 pm (UTC)(link)
Why would your personal life have to be known to the public at all? Not all authors interact with the public, and some downright refuse to (Thomas Harris for example, the creator of Hannibal Lecter).

Good luck :) write your books. Fandom will support you if you choose to make the connection public, and even if not, you'll do fine. Just write if that's what you love to do.
