Really?

Being unfairly judged as creepy deviant predators (compared to other men) is like one of the very few stereotypes unfairly applied to white guys.

I suppose you have the whole narrative of black men as rapists but it doesn't seem to apply to this case as there's a very specific image there.

You don't have to look far for counter examples.

I suppose the comparison would be the way the media has a very specific image of serial killer, or spree killer, and there's honestly a lot of direct equivalences there.

Trigger warning for sexual assault and violence

There's some stereotype that African-American men are more likely to straight-up bash someone's brains in with a baseball bat, and white men are more likely to sneak up to someone before violently assaulting her/him sexually. I have no idea where this comes from.

But the idea of serial killers and spree killers are based off of research. Peoples' assumption that rapists, robbers, murderers, and general law-breakers are black is not because most of them are, it's because of racism. For example: I was watching 'I Survived' the other day, which is a show where people share their stories of times where they survived near-death experience, and there was one woman on the episode I was watching who had been brutally raped at knifepoint in her own apartment. When I went online to look up the picture of her attacker, I found an entire website whose sole purpose was to prove that 100% of serial sexual and violent offenders are either black or Jewish, and that violent crimes are ONLY perpetrated by minorities. I even saw a thread on there dedicated to proving that a specific criminal had even one black/Jewish/Mexican person in his family. The OP of the thread was actually offering money to the person who could find a single non-white member of this rapist's family. When they couldn't find one, they were just like, "Oh well, he looks like a Jew anyway. That's enough proof for me".

tl;dr our perception that all violent offenders are minorities is based on racism. The people who point to certain types of white men are creepy pedophiles are pointing to a very, very specific subtype of white men, and not to white men as a whole, unlike the way they point to black men as a whole as perpetrators of violent crime.

You are right in saying most serial killers are white men. However, violent (particularly murder) is disproportional to black people in comparison with their demographic proportions.

I understand what you're saying, but it's honestly pretty horrible when you think about it. "It's okay to judge white men as serial killers because it's mostly white men, but not okay to think black men are murderers, even though they're mostly black men." This is just as racist and biased.

There can be a lot of reasons these statistics look like this that have nothing to do with the color of your skin: police bias when it comes to arresting and profiling which might favor the stereotype over the truth, circumstances of birth and raising (impoverished people in GENERAL are more likely to commit crime, and black people are more likely to be impoverished).

But if you're going to stereotype and bias crime based on statistics, you can't change goalposts for another.

Except.

Serial killers aren't mostly white men as a percentage of population.

Statistically it's actually black men who are very slightly overrepresented.

The reasons for difference in media portrayal doesn't change the fact that there is a difference, and their original comment likely isn't true.

You're adding a moral critique, when there isn't one.

(or at least directly)

And like I said to the anon below, if you think the research points to white men being over-represented in this specific subset of crime, you'd be mistaken.
