I'm planning on reading this, anon! And I have a friend who really loves it. I think getting it nommed for Yuletide (is it?) or Not Prime Time could help, too, and getting a fandom space for it. ♥

HAHAHAHAA OH ANON TELL US ANOTHER ONE

...or did you forget about the time Jo Walton had a public meltdown about the very idea of people writing fanfics about her stuff? I think that was the one with the rape metaphors, I can't remember. Google it i guess?

(Anonymous) 2012-12-11 12:06 am (UTC)(link)
Wait, really? Holy shit.

Yeah, here! (Link goes directly to the money quote, which is 'I can't respond to all of you who are asking politely if I mind if they write fanfic in worlds I'm not still actively writing or whatever, because it all sounds like "Do you mind being raped just a little bit?"')

This reply arrived before I could edit my comment to say; I certainly don't expect OP to respect Walton's opinion on this (...uh), and I hope you get some fic one day! But I wanted to explain why the secret made me lol.

AYRT

I am actually the anon in the thread above you, and am now DEFINITELY NOT READING THESE, what the fuck. Thank you for linking this.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-11 12:13 am (UTC)(link)
That is the most disappointing and disgusting thing I've seen all day. And I liked that book, too.

wtffffffff but like ALL HER BOOKS ARE FANFIC THEMSELVES, the one in the secret being, for instance, Anthony Trollope fanfic, iirc. And her Small Change trilogy is Brat Farrar fanfic. And she wrote some King Arthur books too, I think, though I haven't read those ones myself. AND SO FORTH.

Also she once explicitly wrote a poem about Narnia and CALLED IT FANFIC AND EVERYTHING

JO WALTON WHAT

Oh man, I liked that book. I didn't think it was super omg awesome, but I definitely enjoyed reading it. That kind of makes me very sad. =(

(Anonymous) 2012-12-11 03:03 am (UTC)(link)
ugh I was interested, for a second.

I'm looking for something to read to get my mind of Ender's Game I recently read ans loved, but like this one, the author's shit and I'm not giving him any money to read the sequel (even though I'd really like to.)

Anyone has recs?

OP

(Anonymous) 2012-12-11 02:39 am (UTC)(link)
I did not know anything about this at all. I know very little about the author or even her other works, I just love THIS BOOK ridiculous amounts and want someone else who loves it with me.

Re: OP

(Anonymous) 2012-12-11 03:05 am (UTC)(link)
I love this one too, anon, and I don't love it less because Walton has bizarro personal issues around fic. But that's why you're not going to find the fandom anywhere -- as you can see from this thread, a lot of potential fans are too put off by her reaction to fandom to stay enthusiastic, while a lot of the ones who're still enthusiastic feel too sorry for her to play in her universe, however silly they think she's being about it all.

I sympathise - let's face it, many of the people who write compelling things are a little batshit in one respect or another, so I mostly just try to not find out too much about them, but then sometimes one of them does something stupid and public like this and everyone finds out what they're like :/ I can't stand Walton's attitude and the rape comment was AMAZINGLY STUPID AND INSULTING, but I still really hope you find people to write fic with.

[personal profile] unicornherds 2012-12-11 12:05 am (UTC)(link)
Huh. Added to my To Read list! Thanks OP!

(Anonymous) 2012-12-11 12:07 am (UTC)(link)
I haven't read that book. but Jo Walton is awesome. So I'm going to cosign on this secret, and read the book as soon as I can.

But I do feel that fandom is not really a place that is, on the whole, interested in mainstream fantasy and science fiction - fantasy and science fiction that's not part of long series, that's not deeply situated within genre trappings, and that's not YA (nothing against YA, it's just a different thing). Fandom just doesn't seem to care much about things that don't fall into any of those categories I mentioned (and maybe 'mainstream' is a bad word there, mea culpa if so).

Seriously one of my favourite books, and the best Anthony Trollope novel written in the last hundred years.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-11 12:12 am (UTC)(link)
I read this book last Christmas and you're right, it's amazing. I'm sorry to hear it hasn't got a fandom because the book deserves it. Really good.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-11 12:36 am (UTC)(link)
Oh man, I read that book years ago and loved it. I wonder if I've still got my copy lying around somewhere? I've been on a bit of a fantasy and/or sci fi comedy of manners kick of late, and that one would be fun to reread.

I do love Jo's novels, but I like the Small Change series SO much more. I may even have started a fancast of Farthing. Oops. Tooth and Claw is fun, especially if you like Trollope, but alternate history/mystery is much more my style.

I think her main issue is that she's very territorial of her vision of not just her own works but others. I know she refuses to see the films of novels she loves (LOTR in particular) so they won't affect/supersede the way she's imagined them for years. Honestly I think it's overreacting ("ok, don't watch them then") and fanfiction is definitely not akin to rape ("ok, don't read them"). For someone who wrote such a love-letter to fandom and fans in Among Others, it's surprising and a little disappointing.

*writes down title and author for later*

(Anonymous) 2012-12-11 03:09 am (UTC)(link)
Well, now i'm intrigued in checking it out, so don't give up so soon, OP

(Anonymous) 2012-12-11 04:06 am (UTC)(link)
It sounded interesting and I added it to my Amazon wishlist, but now that thene's pointed out that the author's a little batshit, I'm not so sure I want to read it, just out of spite. :(

I thought I found a new book about dragons to read about, too.

OP

(Anonymous) 2012-12-11 04:58 am (UTC)(link)
Please read it! It's a great book and I want other people to love it, too!

Try being a fan of her Tir Tanagiri books. They're out of print and no one's even heard of them.

And yeah, her attitudes towards fic are horrific. What's wrong with saying 'Please don't show me any fic you've written for my books' and leaving it at that?

(Anonymous) 2012-12-11 06:39 pm (UTC)(link)
*adds this to my list of dragon books*
