Ditto. It may paint me as a crazy, but to a certain degree, I agree with Erik's viewpoint.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-11 12:13 am (UTC)(link)
I think you're supposed to be able to emphathise with Erik's viewpoint. It doesn't make you crazy.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-11 12:16 am (UTC)(link)
Not to mention it's directly connected to the freaking Holocaust. Yeah, I think it's supposed to be somewhat sympathetic.

You agree with the viewpoint that killing innocent people because they belong to a group who oppresses you is a good idea?

Okaaaaayyyy...

I mean, it's one thing to empathize with his viewpoint, because he sure as hell has plenty of reason to think that way, another thing entirely to actually agree with him.

Also, he believes mutants are superior to humans. Which is not one of the sympathetic and understandable parts of his worldview (like, say, his zero tolerance for "just following orders"), because Shaw was a mutant too. So...eh. He's kind of a failure at being a valid alternative to Charles, as far as I'm concerned. Understandable ideas, but he's personally too wrapped up in himself and his anger issues to be rational about it.

I sort of agree with you, and sort of with the OP. I think some of Erik's views are right (you shouldn't change yourself to fit in with the world, especially when you have so much to offer, etc), but I think the movie overdid it a bit with the "He was tortured by Nazis and now he's acting like one!!11!" theme.

Of course, I only formed that opinion after watching this movie about fifty times, considering it still remains one of my favorite films, and my favorite superhero movie ever. (Sorry Avengers, you've been overdone.)

(Anonymous) 2012-12-11 11:31 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, this. I never saw how going along with the government using the mutants to do their dirty work was such a good idea.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-11 12:12 am (UTC)(link)
This is a totally crazy comparison, but I spent that entire movie sympathizing with Erik and Raven's POV because I'm autistic and wouldn't take a cure unless it was forced on me.

This feels wanky or ridiculous, but it's how I feel. Basically, totally with you, anon.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-11 12:55 am (UTC)(link)
I don't think this is wanky or ridiculous!

Even not being a comics geeks, it's obvious that the mutants are symbolic of many kinds of "other", and that makes any discussion of a cure inherently really disturbing. Like, god, don't even get me started on X3.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-11 01:26 am (UTC)(link)
AYRT

To say "I'm with Erik on this one" feels like I'm saying "Let's kill everyone who isn't Other," which I don't agree with. I more agree with the sane sentiment behind it, which is "FUCK YOU, I AM NOT ONLY OTHER, I AM MILITANTLY SO." Raven and Hank's storyline made me cry, no lie, because, oh my god.

X3.............. yeah that's all I have to say on it without ranting.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-11 04:23 pm (UTC)(link)
I just hate the LGBT/others/mutants comparisons. They, you know, can't kill you with their brains.

And about X3... I hated Jean's plot (of course, women ~can't deal with ~power)and Mystique's (DNW forced cure for my bb. BTW, that scene is the reason I hate Erik)but when peple bitch about Rogue... really? She couldn't even touch people because it would KILL THEM. Anyone sane would have don't the same (anyway, I would've prefered she'd learned to control her powers, to be honest).

SA

*would have do.

I wish we anons could edit.

Honestly, one of the things I liked about First Class is that both Charles and Erik were wrong and a bit (or a lot) stupid about things. So...if they were my only two choices, I'm not entirely sure who I'd have thrown in with.

I seem to be the only one who goes the other way.

Shoots him in the back when he's not focused on me. Too dangerous too live.

Joined him because a)pro-annihilating the normals, or b)anti-turning the other cheek to the normals? Because I think there's an important distinction between the two.

(...or c)he's hawt?)

After what happened on the beach, I absolutely would have. But before that, I would have been more optimistic.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-11 03:07 am (UTC)(link)
I don't know, anon. What makes you think you'd be more... 'patriotic' of your race as a mutant than you are now?
Because right now you want to join the guy who'd kill your race.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-11 03:12 am (UTC)(link)
I completely, 100% would have too. his methods may not be right, but it would feel right to me.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-11 09:39 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I'd turn my back on my "best friend" while he lay on the ground with a bullet in his, too. It's a nice little deserved lesson for the too-privileged-not-Other-enough-Nazi-sympathizing dick.
