... I would actually feel incredibly uncomfortable playing a GTA game as a female character.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-11 12:10 am (UTC)(link)
...Why?

(Anonymous) 2012-12-11 12:27 am (UTC)(link)
Because considering the roles females play in both RL and fictional criminal world it would be pretty hard for me to believe that a female character could really achieve the respect and power Tommy or C.J. gained in their games, and this being a hypothetical GTA game, I would always be wary of the game expecting me to do things male PCs wouldn't be expected to do. *shrugs*

That's a pretty big problem, if you ask me. Just seeing that you accept the small-minded ideas that female characters are left with is what hurts everything.

Don't tell me you've never played as a girl with a few cheat codes? Or even in GTA: SA as one of the girlfriends? Give a chick a bazooka and a couple of tanks and she'll get some respect.

I've got bigger problems in my life than worrying about tiny things such as this, to be honest.

Don't tell me you've never played as a girl with a few cheat codes? Or even in GTA: SA as one of the girlfriends?

Nope, I refrain from using cheat codes. I even have hard time using mods for games like the Elder Scrolls of the newer Fallouts, because I have this OCD of wanting to experience everything as the developers intended them to be.

sa

... wow, that came out harsher than I intended. I really should stop writing comments at 2:30 a.m.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-11 01:37 am (UTC)(link)
You're a stickler for wanting to experience games that way, maybe. That's not what OCD is, so please don't throw the term around that way. It's like saying you're so Aspie when you feel socially awkward.

I am more than aware what OCD is, thank you very much. Using OCD this way is a frequently used expression in my mother tongue.

Griselda Blanco. Google her. Nao.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-11 05:52 am (UTC)(link)
That's a very American view of organized crime. In Italy, lots of the men in the mafia have been jailed over the past decades and their wives and daughters have been taking over. First in a "doing the work until the man comes home" stuff, but now you've got women in drivebys and grandmothers hiding pistols in their bras before getting hauled down to the police station (I kid you not) whereas in America the mafia is still very much a boys club.

Most successful pirate (not female pirate, just PIRATE) was a woman: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ching_Shih

She ruled the South China seas and was so badass the government was afraid of her. They let her keep her loot and retire when she wanted to, and then she lived out her life until she died at the age of 69.

I hate when I crush hard on dead people.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-11 07:20 am (UTC)(link)
LOL You must be new to the world of organized crime. Ever heard of the Cocaine Godmother, Griselda Blanco? ...yeah, so, she got gunned down, but still. Puh-lease.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-11 10:48 am (UTC)(link)
> been reading and watching organized crime documents and recollections since I was a teen

> anon says I must be new to the world of organized crime

What is this, I don't even.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-12 03:28 am (UTC)(link)
>doesn't know about famous/influential figures in the history of organized crime

>claims to have been tracking organized crime since s/he was a teen

What is this, I don't even.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-11 12:20 am (UTC)(link)
I wouldn't. The idea that a female protagonist would be a bad thing for the series comes from the utterly asinine, off-base total fucking HORSESHIT idea that having a female protagonist means she must have no authority and be threatened with rape in order to maintain realism.

It'd be trivially easy to write, too. Make the lead a lady, maybe also swap the sex of all the hookers and strippers. Wham. Done.

That game is SO FUCKING MUCH FUN OMG

like it is actually stupid. I just kill everyone in sight with my pink-haired black chick protagonist and it is beautiful to watch

Thisssssss. One of the few times actually stupid is beautiful.

I saw the Two Best Friends Play episode of this game. It was so precious.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-11 12:26 am (UTC)(link)
As long as it was written for a female character, I don't see what the problem would be. All of the GTA games since Vice city have had talking main characters, so just slotting in an optional female model probably wouldn't work, but a game written around one could be good.

[personal profile] unicornherds 2012-12-11 01:52 am (UTC)(link)
But that's a personal issue and your own problems with female characters shouldn't determine what everyone else should be allowed to play. If they simply had the option of female or male, you could avoid your discomfort by not playing the female character.
