When I was reading these stories, Watson was like the everyman character I could relate to. Holmes is not as easy for most people to relate to, so I feel like Watson is the buffer between the reader and Holmes. Also, from a purely technical standpoint, Watson is there to discuss methodology with Holmes so you know what the fuck is even going on in Holmes' mind

Basically, I totally agree with you OP, you are right

I can relate to Holmes but I still think the stories would be shit without Watson. It's just not as interesting having a single eccentric genius doing all the everything.

Watson was like the everyman character I could relate to.

I wonder if that's not the issue. The person this secret maker is describing may feel that the adventures of the eccentric genius detective are being spoiled by being filtered through the mind of someone who isn't his equal. (I'm going to guess that this person identifies way too much with Holmes.)
