19 years of corrupting children

[personal profile] dethtoll 2012-12-11 12:52 am (UTC)(link)
On December 10th, 1993, the shareware episode of that most infamous of murder simulators, Doom, was uploaded onto the Software Creations BBS and an FTP server at U of Wisconsin-Madison.

That's 19 years. Where were you in December 1993?

Happy Doomsday, everyone!~

(YES I CELEBRATE IT EVERY YEAR SHUT UP)

Celebrating my third December, either with my grandparents, my mother or my father.

Happy Doomsday I guess?

you realize there's probably a ton of people on F!S right now who weren't even born when it came out, right. there are people in college who weren't born when Doom came out probably.

i was only a toddler myself.

Four days away from having my fourth birthday. I don't remember anything about December 10th, but I do vaguely remember my fourth birthday party four days later (I think I got a lot of dolls, or maybe that was the year I was five).

I was only in first grade, so in December I was probably eagerly anticipating Santa's arrival.

I was about a month away from discovering Doom and almost seven years away from American McGee's Alice.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-11 01:05 am (UTC)(link)
First semester of college. Preparing to bail on my forced roommate and go live with someone else in a different dorm. DJ on student radio.

Man, things were really looking up that month of that year. Who knew it would all be downhill from there?

I would have been 12, and probably desperately excited about the end of term and Christmas and all that sort of stuff.

I was thirteen and sadly without access to DOOM.

HAPPY DOOMDAY TO YOU TOO!

Doom and Wolfenstein 3D - I always bounced between fright and amusement while playing them. And they will forever be entwined as one game in my memory.

I remember watching my cousin play it at the christmas party that year! ha

Uh, I was three so I was probably rearranging the furniture. I don't know why but I really loved pushing the furniture around at that age. I distinctly remember enjoying blocking doorways.

So yeah, it didn't really affect me, unfortunately.

Maybe I should play it just to get a sense of history.

Being seven years old and... being sad because my mom was having a boy and not a girl. I really wanted a sister since I had/have no female family members close to my age.

I don't really remember.

Being a three year old, so probably toddling around with a bucket on my head.

Celebrating a birthday. Oh yeah, and I guess Christmas too. I think I'd just gotten into junior high then?

Buried into my house by four feet of snow! Oh, Blizzard of '93, how I don't miss you.

(Also, hilariously, December 10th happens to be my two brothers' birthday. HAPPY DOOMSDAY DUDES)

I was seven, so I think I was watching jurassic park and obsessing over dinosaurs. The only games I played were on my Super NES.

Playing Doom extremely poorly. I sucked at FPS games pretty bad back then. Thankfully I've gotten a bit better with age.

I was just over a month from my 5th birthday. I was very into sea creatures, particularly orcas. I got into Star Wars when I was around 6, so not quite there yet. Sometimes my dad let us play Gauntlet on the computer (a 1990 Macintosh Plus that we still have and still can play Gauntlet on!), so that's probably the closest to Doom I came to in the early '90s.

I was almost four, so probably reading something. I wasn't a very active child.

I was probably extorting money from my classmates, or knocking on doors Christmas caroling at my slummy neighbourhood in hopes that people will give me money for singing. I would have then used the money to buy candy to resell to my sugar-deprived classmates for profit and moar candy.

I was a bit entrepreneurial for a first grader. :]

I can't remember what I was doing in December 1993.

But I do remember buying a box of Chex cereal in August '96 and receiving that most hallowed of items: the Chex Quest promotional game.

(Incidentally I'm playing the BFG edition of Doom 3 right now...)
