Okay, this is late, but -

Directed to people from the UK: which is the 'default' Ireland?

As in, if someone says "I'm going to Ireland next week" do you assume it's the Republic of Ireland or North Ireland? Or does it matter? Which one do you usually quantify?

Most people would assume Republic of Ireland. I know this because I used to live in Northern Ireland, and saying I lived in 'Ireland' always led to misunderstanding. Although I swear there's a whole subset of English people who don't even seem aware that Northern Ireland is a thing, so there's that.

Oh! Thanks for answering :) I swear this question has been bugging me for ages.

It's kind of weird that there's people that don't know Northern Ireland exists - granted, I didn't for a long while, but I'm not British. It must get annoying, though!

Ireland will always mean the Republic of Ireland to me, Northern Ireland is always referred to as Northern Ireland. (I'm English)
