Personally, I was more weirded out that Buffy managed to get into fucking Northwestern, among other prestigious universities. Seriously? Don't get me wrong -- Buffy Summers is possibly my single favorite fictional character ever -- but she was hardly the sharpest knife in the drawer when it came to life in general, much less her studies, and that's not counting the sound beating her grades took due to spending several hours a week slaying, saving the world, and going through trauma that would poleaxe a thirty-year-old, let alone a 16-year-old.

Plus, she burned down her school. Twice. That didn't get on her record somewhere?

Yes, this. SAT scores matter, but schools look at other things too. Bad grades will have an effect on what schools you get into even if you do well on your SATs. Especially when you don't have any extra curricular activities or anything else that might make you attractive to a college.

I just headcanoned that someone on the admissions board had picked up on the whole 'There's a lot of weird things going on and Ms. Summers' presence has been known to lower the bodycount of the students' thing. No one likes college death scandals.

Yes good I like this, now accepting this headcanon

that kind of thing irritates me in general. TV makes it look entirely too easy to get into the best universities.

You just reminded me of an American teen movie I watched once which ended with the main character (who hadn't been able to get off her arse to fill out any college applications) getting into Oxford university. Yeah, no.

(Honestly in that case I suspect it's just that Oxford is the only British university they could rely on American audiences having heard of, maybe?)

Maybe someone from the Watcher's Council was on the admissions board?

(Anonymous) 2012-12-12 01:33 am (UTC)(link)
But surely they would have wanted her to stay near the Hellmouth? Which she wouldn't have done if she'd actually gone to the other universities she'd been accepted to.

Yeah, I never really understood her sudden academic inclinations either. Honestly I'd have rather watched a show about most of Buffy&Co going the non-college route than the terrible university plots we got (or the obnoxious portrayal of Xander as a shiftless loser for being the only one not going to school.)

Given that the Initiative was based there, someone in the admissions board knew of - or was able to intuit - her 'extracurriculars' and she got the admission based on that.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-12 04:17 pm (UTC)(link)
The Initiative was based in UC Sunnydale, which is likely a safety school that Buffy could get into without much difficulty. They had no idea she would choose over all the great colleges on the east coast she somehow manages to get into.

Guh, right, my bad. Wrote the post just after getting up, didn't really read properly. (Or write properly. There is at least one key clause ('I assume') missing from my post. Cripes.)

Still, given that, despite the big deal being made of the Masquerade, there are a lot of people, in a lot of key positions who know what's going on, it's not too far fetched to believe someone in the schools' admissions boards know Buffy's deal.
