Right, cause Joss is the only one who forgets his characters should be in class every now and then...

He's her TA. It's completely inappropriate.

*spits out water laughing*

Someone's never been to college... :D

Actually, I was a TA and had the ethics lecture.

If you've been fucking your TAs, they've been committing a serious ethical violation and can be expelled from their graduate program. It's not just "frowned upon", it's flat out prohibited - as it should be. It's not cute, it's not funny - it's abusive. If you have information about such shenanigans you should report the offending party.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-12 01:27 pm (UTC)(link)
I am currently a TA. If I was in any way involved with one of the undergraduates in my department I could be expelled from my program. Every school is different, but some schools take a very hard line against those sorts of relationships.

They also take a hardline against graduate student/professor relationships for much the same reason. The power dynamics are such that it tends towards problematic if not straight up abusive very fast.

"I am in graduate school and slowly becoming so out of touch with actual reality that I'm worried about the academic politics of Initiative professors."

Pretty much, yeah.

Except I graduated last year, so it's all even more sad and pathetic.

lol. Don't ever watch Gossip Girl, then. (Remember when Blair and Dan and Nate were all in college? No?? That's ok. The show doesn't either.)

But meh. It doesn't bother me.

Personally, I was more weirded out that Buffy managed to get into fucking Northwestern, among other prestigious universities. Seriously? Don't get me wrong -- Buffy Summers is possibly my single favorite fictional character ever -- but she was hardly the sharpest knife in the drawer when it came to life in general, much less her studies, and that's not counting the sound beating her grades took due to spending several hours a week slaying, saving the world, and going through trauma that would poleaxe a thirty-year-old, let alone a 16-year-old.

Plus, she burned down her school. Twice. That didn't get on her record somewhere?

[personal profile] philstar22 2012-12-12 12:21 am (UTC)(link)
Yes, this. SAT scores matter, but schools look at other things too. Bad grades will have an effect on what schools you get into even if you do well on your SATs. Especially when you don't have any extra curricular activities or anything else that might make you attractive to a college.

I just headcanoned that someone on the admissions board had picked up on the whole 'There's a lot of weird things going on and Ms. Summers' presence has been known to lower the bodycount of the students' thing. No one likes college death scandals.

Even when they were in high school, I wondered how the characters had time for school, homework, hanging out, whatever family obligations they had, sleep, and researching and fighting demons. I barely had time for the first five, and I didn't even have a paying job back then. These people have the best time-management skills EVER.

In season 7 episode "Selfless" Willow enrolls back in school and the professor mentions how her grades were dropping then "like magic" went back to A's

This is so common in tv/movies/books/whatever that I've pretty much stopped even noticing it.

Eh, this is common in so many shows I barely noticed it in Buffy. :P

Also, you'd be surprised at how much free time some (key word, some) grad students have. It varies a lot depending on the subject, of course, and what pace they're going at, etc.

Okay now I am confused, I go to lectures all of 8 hours a week... None of it is mandatory. There is plenty of time to do other stuff with the rest of the time you got?

And exams are marked by your lecturers? Wouldn't that make them terribly biased?

I like this secret.

(I thought Buffy and Riley's relationship was squicky for the same reason, though I've known a few TAs who slept with their students; then again, all of Buffy's relationships were squicky in some way.)
lunabee34: (lorraine is a teacher by emella)

[personal profile] lunabee34 2012-12-12 02:00 am (UTC)(link)
TAs totally sleep with their students; hell, professors totally sleep with their students. At none of the institutions where I have been a student or teacher was that something that was considered ethical. If you were doing so, you were hiding it and you risked losing your position if you were found out.

So, it's not surprising that TA!Riley dates Buffy while she's his student. It is surprising that they're so open about the relationship and he receives no reprisals.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-12 03:16 am (UTC)(link)
Speaking as school staff: Issues like these are endemic whenever a school, college or university is the backdrop to a story rather than the focus of its plot, and sometimes even then.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-12 03:46 am (UTC)(link)
I.... oddly, I'm not sure that aspect had ever even occurred to me. Maybe in passing? But for some reason that mostly went right by me. Which is odd because mostly I hate teacher/student, boss/employee, etc. type relationships. If they'd ever done Buffy/Giles I'd have had a fit for example. Maybe it was because I mainly just saw Riley's TA position as a cover and I was more interested in seeing when they were going to find out about each other's secret lives. I don't know. Hmmm.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-12 05:21 am (UTC)(link)
Do TAs in America have lots of power over students or something?
Here, if a TA wants to date a student, they just have to declare it to someone in charge and depending on the subject/department they either just move the student/TA to a different class, or leave them as is if the TAs just teach the class and have no control over their grades.

Just going to add that while, yes this is incredibly unrealistic for many students, it's TV. Do you really want to watch Buffy and Willow sit in class for the hour long show, or do you want to watch monster fighting and witchcraft and fun exciting stuff that has nothing to do with reality?

Basically, yes, it's bullshit, but storytelling wise, it'd be so incredibly dull to include a ton and a half of lectures and classwork into an hour long tv show. It's the same as not showing say... Chandler at work on Friends unless something out of the ordinary happens. We know he goes, we know he must spend a good amount of time there, but we don't have to watch it to know that.

I dated a TA as an undergrad...though, we worked in the same department and that was for a single semester and he never taught any of my classes.
