I don't disagree, but I think the reason why fanfic smut is better is because the characters are already established (not only from canon, from other fic in the fandom) so the authors don't have to work on that/risk failing at it. And by that token, people who read a lot of fanfic have absolutely no reason to go get published erotic that they have to pay for (and get invested in wholly new characters) when they can get fanfic for free. So, there's that. I mean at best fanfic writers eager to try out new things/write their own stories may be encouraged to write original erotic fic (and some are! I've seen a couple of slash writers make the foray into m/m erotic fiction, and they tend to be pretty good), but that's really all you can hope for.

That's a good point. I haven't read anything that would be really classified 'erotica' - mostly sci-fi or fantasy with smut elements - but I'm guessing that there's a pressure to get to the sex quickly to keep readers from getting bored, at the expense of plot or characterization, where with a PWP fic your audience already knows who's who and what's what, so even if there's little or no establishment before the smut begins, you're still seeing it through the lens of richly developed characters and powerful relationships.
