I agree and disagree. I actually didn't like her characterization at first, not because she was a smart geek, but because she was essentially a CARBON COPY of Sheldon.

I kind of liked when they showed she had a sexual side, but when her and Sheldon officially got together is close to where I stopped watching the series. I really don't like how he treats her, and it's obvious she wants more from a relationship then Sheldon is willing to give.

But that show is a damn mess when it comes to writing women, and the male characters just got more unlikeable for me as seasons passed so I had to stop watching.

But yeah, I agree about the point of needing more female representation for girl geeks. Even Amy never really liked comics or sci-fi so that show tends to ignore a large portion of geek culture.
