Amy never liked Sci-Fi either.

I came here to point out that detail too.

I'm not happy with the direction they are taking her. But she as a character have always wanted to fit in and be one of the girls, she was never into comic books or science fiction.

Penny takes an interest once in a while though, and she is a pretty good gamer.

I am so tired of that still being an okay stereotype. I remember being really jarred when a random episode of How I Met Your Mother did a "girls don't like science fiction" joke. I mean it's 2012, there's a lot of press with female fans (not that there WEREN'T BEFORE) so it's not a new thing.

OP

(Anonymous) 2012-12-13 09:40 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I was trying to get two related gripes into one secret, I never thought Amy was into sci-fi.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-12 11:48 pm (UTC)(link)
I agree and disagree. I actually didn't like her characterization at first, not because she was a smart geek, but because she was essentially a CARBON COPY of Sheldon.

I kind of liked when they showed she had a sexual side, but when her and Sheldon officially got together is close to where I stopped watching the series. I really don't like how he treats her, and it's obvious she wants more from a relationship then Sheldon is willing to give.

But that show is a damn mess when it comes to writing women, and the male characters just got more unlikeable for me as seasons passed so I had to stop watching.

But yeah, I agree about the point of needing more female representation for girl geeks. Even Amy never really liked comics or sci-fi so that show tends to ignore a large portion of geek culture.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-12 11:55 pm (UTC)(link)
Anon, are you me? I'm constantly bitching about lack of good geek girl representation on that show. And my husband is sick of me bitching that Amy needs to get up off of Sheldon. If a show had a guy trying to pressure a girl into sex the way she's trying to pressure Sheldon, people would be flipping their shit.

Spoiler Alert! Especially this week when she got him to rub her boobs on a false pretense. Imagine if that had been "oh baby, I need you to rub this ointment on my balls so it will feel better". So gross.

Holy crap are you me? I wrote that EXACT same sentiment. But some Shamy shipper was all "How is that abuse/manipulation/I hate you for hating Shamy!!"

Seriously, you can't see the double standard there? Really?

UGH.

And yeah....I think my bf is getting tired of me and my ranting about the show....it's put him off from watching it a little bit. >_> Didn't mean to do that, but....I can't stand what's happening, yet I watch in hopes that it'll get better....

(Anonymous) 2012-12-13 12:31 am (UTC)(link)
I can't stand what's happening, yet I watch in hopes that it'll get better.

There used to be a great website, Jump the Shark, where people discussed the point where shows "went bad." It got bought by TV Guide or somesuch, and is not so good anymore.

But I posited a question to a small group a while back, and I'm curious to open it to a wider group: Are there any shows that have come back from "shark zone" or once they're gone, are they gone for good? As a follow up, are there any sitcoms that have lasted beyond 5 years and remained strong/never jumped?

I feel like the answer is no - there's only so many stories to tell, and it starts to fall apart after a while. I'm particularly curious about other people's thoughts on the first -any SITCOM that got bad, but got better (I think some procedural dramas managed to do so, but I'm only talking sitcoms for now). Anyone?

This - sort of. Though, once they took her from being asexual, to trying to pressure him I lost all interest. I've been there, and had a [now ex] SO do that to me so it rubs me in all the wrong ways to see it being shown that way.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-13 12:18 am (UTC)(link)
One of us is using vapo-rub wrong. I don't put it anywhere that wouldn't also be exposed with a v-neck shirt. Perhaps a v-neck that would require a camisole to wear to a real job, but nothing we don't see on Penny every week. So in short, sternum NE boobs.

The double standard is there, no doubt, but still.

Because boobs are like balls, lolwtf.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-12 11:56 pm (UTC)(link)
Amy was never into scifi or gaming like the other guys but I am upset that they took her character (who was just as disinterested in sex as Sheldon) and sexualised it beyond all recognition. Her character is basically all about trying to get into Sheldon's pants now. And not to check them for their size.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-12 11:58 pm (UTC)(link)
She and Howard are the worst characters on that show by a wide margin. I know Howard is probably still a creep, but does she still sexually harass/creep on Penny for laughs?

Actually, last I watched, Howard had really settled down a lot.

But, yeah, Amy's switch from 'asexual' to 'creepy damned stalker' (with a brief pause at 'vaguely curious') really pissed me off.

So, you are upset because a show that makes fun of geeks doesn't have a strong female geek?

(Anonymous) 2012-12-13 12:13 am (UTC)(link)
I stopped watching as soon as she was introduced. Couldn't stand her then, can't stand her now, glad I left that train wreck of a show.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-13 01:27 am (UTC)(link)
Pretty much the same. The actress's voice irritates me so much I used to mute it when she appeared. Then her character annoyed me to the point where I haven't seen the last couple seasons. Sometimes I like the show, sometimes I hate it, but I would really have enjoyed it/would enjoy it more if Amy had never appeared. She seems...unnecessary.

So much agreement. she seemed great at first, but her creepy obsession with Penny and Sheldon has just ruined her for me. :C

We DO need a geek girl on that show. Someone who genuinely likes all the sci-fi/fantasy stuff the guys do and not as a show to get in bed with one of them. Or something. Someone who can be on par with Penny, like the things she likes, but also like the geek stuff and maybe even sway the other girls into a bit more. You know?

But my hope for that is as vain as Penny/Leonard and Amy/Sheldon breaking up. :/

(Anonymous) 2012-12-13 12:23 am (UTC)(link)
Agreed. She was awesome and now she's just a joke. She is the one character that I really really liked on the show and they've just basically ruined her. It's almost painful to watch.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-13 12:28 am (UTC)(link)
I stopped watching after the last season for the very same reason. I absolutely hate what they did with Amy and Bernadette.

I'M NOT THE ONLY ONE! When they first introduced her as "the female Sheldon" I was so excited, but she's gotten so watered down and now she just bores me. Arg. Thanks, OP, for making me feel less hyper-crititical :P

Idk, the show has ups and downs. Like on one had they do have female scientists. The three girls are friends. And all three girls get to be funny.

On the other hand, Amy and Bernadette are kind of only on the show in relation to the guys.

I have to agree with this and everyone else. My interest in this show is wavering for various different reasons but the change in Amy is definitely one of them. I had no problem with them making her sexual, I thought it added an interesting dynamic to her relationship with Sheldon but pretty much from the point of the Relationship Agreement, I realised that this wasn't a relationship that I could approve of any more. It just seems cruel to them both and I can't even see where it is all leading to.

I also agree with having a more geeky female character on the show. I would love to see something like Stuart getting a woman in to help run the store and she ACTUALLY KNOWS HER STUFF. She knows arcs in comic books, she understands Star Wars and Star Trek references, she could kick their ass at Halo 4 and she shrugs it off like 'duh, what's the big deal?' because it's really not a big deal. So many women like this stuff, why is that so hard for people to comprehend? And I would hope they didn't stick her in a relationship with anyone and just let her be her own ball of awesome.
