Yeah, I get what you mean. I do really like the movie, if for nothing else than the back-stabbing between the girls and the "assimilation" mentality...Regina George makes a fascinating character study. But I always have trouble relating to the "high school clique" thing in movies--the high school I went to was a magnet school, so the entire school's population was probably made up of your average nerd/drama geek clique--so I have no idea how exaggerated or not exaggerated it is here. I'm not sure what it is disconnecting you from the movie, but I do understand how certain aspects may not be as much of a draw as others.

I went to a school that had between 1800 and 2000 students. People basically left you alone if you didn't actively try to irritate them.

However, Mean Girls shows the stereotypical, possibly archetypal dynamics of female groups. Occasionally, there are groups of females with no power struggles, backstabbing, and/or bitchiness, but I've seen this type of group from the workplace to dorms to fandom. That's why I think it's so popular as a fandom meme: Regina George is a queen bee BNF. She also gets hit by a bus, which is kind of awesome and extremely satisfying.
