As many have said, because it reminded them of their high school.

I thought it was okay and, surprise, found it was nothing like my high school experience. I honestly believe the reason I think it's okay instead of great was that I could not for one moment believe the high school was like a real high school. (Well, an exaggerated one.)

I mean, I know there are people here who have said their high schools were like that and damn I never want to go to your high school. But! While intellectually I can realize it's based on a lot on a bunch of high school experiences, emotionally because that was not my experience it just seems bizarre.

For me, it's weird and sometimes unpleasant to watch because, while my high school was like that, I was DEFINITELY not a part of any of it.

Ah, so I guess the alienation of the subject reaches even further.

You know, I have to wonder in times like these, are fictional high schools simply a mere imitations of current high schools or do they perpetuate at all the toxic atmosphere by teaching younger kids that this is how high school is? I'm not talking about Mean Girls in particular, just generic TV shows that take place in high schools that use a similar style.

IDK, though, man. My high school was nothing like that and I still love the movie.

I see is as more of a hurdle that makes it harder to connect with the movie. It doesn't mean that no one can connect with it if their high school wasn't like that but it makes it harder to do so. You were able to pass the hurdle, I wasn't.

Or I could be talking out my ass. Who knows? I mean, I still liked the movie. I just feel that I don't to the extent everyone else does.
