You're forgetting that going from Book 2 into Book 3 was a really big deal in ATLA. We knew that the story was going to wrap up and that Aang still had a lot of training to go through before encountering Ozai. Book 2 had some great storylines in it, not to mention introducing us to Toph. There was no way not to be excited about Book 3 and still celebrate Book 2 in the meantime.

It isn't like that in LoK at all. What is the second half of Book 1 going to be about? There's nothing in the show itself that really needs to be addressed, so the excitement is pretty much non-existent. I don't blame the fans for being flaky because the show fell short of expectations and didn't really leave viewers looking for more.

If LoK is what ruined the ATLA fandom (a fandom that needed to be squashed a long time ago), then that's on the members of the ATLA fandom. The flash in the pan fandom of LoK is going to keep coming and going as the creators drag out the series the next several years. They've included just enough to compel hardcore ATLA fans (including the thousands of us who wouldn't go anywhere that batshit psycho fandom) to watch but not enough to keep the LoK fans truly invested.
