lesson of the story: tumblr ruins everything

nah, just kidding (except not really)

I'm sorry, op :( this sucks

(Anonymous) 2012-12-13 01:09 am (UTC)(link)
Second on that conclusion!

(Anonymous) 2012-12-12 11:24 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't care about what it did to the fandom.

I wish LoK had never been made because it fucking sucked.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-13 01:56 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, there were some parts of it that entertained me, but I usually just ignore it.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-12 11:27 pm (UTC)(link)
Good riddance. The ATLA fandom was a steaming pit of dog shit from the get-go. I'm glad it's finally dying off.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-12 11:41 pm (UTC)(link)
I thought this was going to be about how the episodes got more and more disappointing, but this is true, too.
I confess I was confused as to how to tag things on tumblr for LOK. I can't imagine the mess it caused on LJ.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-13 12:05 am (UTC)(link)
I started watching ATLA as a teenager. I'm twenty five now and you know what? I loved LoK a lot more. Of course I'm not hypersensitive about Mako, I don't think Asami is a weeping fragile waifu, and I don't think Bolin ever wanted to be a cop. So there's that.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-13 12:14 am (UTC)(link)
Because those are the actual reasons why a lot of people were disappointed with LoK...

Any particular reasons as to why you prefer LoK over ATLA?

Me, too, actually. I liked ATLA fine, but I greatly preferred LoK. I know how angry this opinion makes the fandom, but it's true. Korra was way cooler than Aang, it was easier for me to relate with an older teen character than a twelve year old. Hell, I liked all the characters, even Mako. I also really enjoyed the "steampunk" style setting, and thought the humor was great. My only regret is that this story was stuffed into twelve episodes, if it had been 24 I think it would have been a lot better - slow things down, build the drama more, explore the characters... but as it was, I'd much rather rewatch Korra than ATLA.

Lol there are a lot more reasons to be disappointed in LoK than that. Seriously? THERE ARE A LOT OF HUGE, HUGE FLAWS.

That being said, Bolin not being a cop doesn't bug me at all (I didn't even know it was a popular fanon before Mako was announced as being one). And who thinks Asami is a weeping fragile waifu? Being irritated at the way Mako treated her does not mean we don't think she can handle herself.

I'm guessing the die-off has something to do with LoK failing to meet expectations in many ways.

That said, there's only been one season. There will be more. There isn't really a long-term committed fanbase yet.

OP

(Anonymous) 2012-12-13 01:17 am (UTC)(link)
True... I guess it's just particularly annoying since a lot of the new LoK fans tended to be the most gung-ho and vocal in support of the new series, and now that it's over, they're nowhere to be found.

Plus a bunch claimed they'd never watched the original series, and several said they had no intention to. All while praising LoK to the high heavens, and - as episodes progressed - trying to chew out people who started to say they preferred ATLA to LoK, asking why they were even in an LoK comm to begin with. (Those particular kind of person weren't as common though, since the general consensus was, yeah, it definitely fell short.)

No new fans, no new content a lot sooner, thus no live fandom period.

It's gotta grow. And it did. Deal. They'll be back.

i'm glad LoK was made because it's a fantastic show and it's great but let's ignore that and just talk about fandoms for a second

you miss the pre-LoK ATLA fandom

because it was "mellow"

and "homey"???

this is the fandom that unleashed zutara vs. kataang on the world, holy shit

(Anonymous) 2012-12-13 12:31 am (UTC)(link)
Agree to disagree because I thought LoK was pretty awful aside from the animation quality, but otherwise, MTE. Anyone calling ATLA fandom "mellow" is out of their gourd.

OP

(Anonymous) 2012-12-13 12:59 am (UTC)(link)
I'm not talking 2005-2008 ATLA fandom, but more of 2010/2011 ATLA fandom.

Although I did love the old ship wars for the "OMG GUYS, WHAT WHAT WHAT ARE WE DOING" value. (I got into the show/fandom in 2006.)

The shippers and stans ruined everything.

I'll tell you why it died down.

Because even though most of fandom won't admit it to themselves, LoK was an inferior show, and there's less to grab on to, less to think about, less to say.

It'll pick back up when the show starts back up; more's the pity.

a fandom dying after only a handful of months (or even weeks, for that matter) is something I've noticed with anime. I like to wait for a series to end before I start writing fanfic for it (or even just an arc to finish if it's a really long running series) and that's the death knell because by the time I'm ready to crank up writing, the fandom is pretty much dead. :/

I think a lot of people stopped being active because they were disappointed in the series.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-13 03:29 am (UTC)(link)
I think that part of it is the structure of the two series. ATLA was one long story line over three seasons so even during the break there was a lot of speculation going on as to where the story was going.

For LoK, the story being told is over and there's not much to talk about because we have no idea what the next story is going to be.

You're complaining that the new fans didn't stay put and tell them to go away in the same breath? Idiot much?

(Anonymous) 2012-12-14 05:32 am (UTC)(link)
You're forgetting that going from Book 2 into Book 3 was a really big deal in ATLA. We knew that the story was going to wrap up and that Aang still had a lot of training to go through before encountering Ozai. Book 2 had some great storylines in it, not to mention introducing us to Toph. There was no way not to be excited about Book 3 and still celebrate Book 2 in the meantime.

It isn't like that in LoK at all. What is the second half of Book 1 going to be about? There's nothing in the show itself that really needs to be addressed, so the excitement is pretty much non-existent. I don't blame the fans for being flaky because the show fell short of expectations and didn't really leave viewers looking for more.

If LoK is what ruined the ATLA fandom (a fandom that needed to be squashed a long time ago), then that's on the members of the ATLA fandom. The flash in the pan fandom of LoK is going to keep coming and going as the creators drag out the series the next several years. They've included just enough to compel hardcore ATLA fans (including the thousands of us who wouldn't go anywhere that batshit psycho fandom) to watch but not enough to keep the LoK fans truly invested.
