People always complain about change. They'll be fine once they've got used to it.

And then they'll complain again the next time something's changed.

I feel the same about the bitching about the new Gmail interface a while back. Like, seriously? Does it inherently make your life harder? Is it so difficult to figure out you actually need a manual? Come on now. Deal with it.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-18 03:44 am (UTC)(link)
I didn't need a manual but it definitely made my life harder because I couldn't adjust the color scheme, something I'd been doing since gmail was invite-only. I can't actually see my email anymore, so there was no real point in keeping the account.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-18 04:33 am (UTC)(link)
But... you CAN

(Anonymous) 2012-12-18 12:49 pm (UTC)(link)
You couldn't adjust the color scheme because you are an idiot, not because it's no longer an option.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-18 12:41 am (UTC)(link)
Wait, what?

I'm on tumblr right now, and I'm not seeing what's different? (Besides the new "better" notifications that I do not like. I'm pretty sure that's not what you're talking about, though.)

(Anonymous) 2012-12-18 12:45 am (UTC)(link)
I expect they're bitching about the people who are bitching about the newest Livejournal changes. Which, if you want a Tumblr style format, then wonderful for you. But this is not a cosmetic change like the last ones were, it's a change in the way the site actually functions, which pretty much erases the reason most of us signed up in the first place. *shrug*

OP

(Anonymous) 2012-12-18 01:33 am (UTC)(link)
Nope, just Tumblr specifically. Livejournal's usability is being broken with each new update and I blame no one for complaining about that.

Tumblr benefits from the "oh shiny" approach because, unfortunately, that's what it's being geared to.

Livejournal on the other hand, is a journal service, where posts and comments are the meat of the social experience, and that attracted its mostly niche userbase. The administration is clearly pushing to change that to a Facebook-est experience, to attract a more mainstream userbase which wants that social experience. (And also because money.)

I said "Livejournal-y" -- and that's where this confusion came from? -- because there are users trying to use Tumblr as their journals of sort, and the website has never lent itself well to that use. (It can be done, sure, but it's very inconvenient as a way to get organized feedback or a discussion, like you would in Livejournal.) So they're forcing a use out of a website whose administration has never shown an interest in providing with that specific experience.

The lesson to be learned into all this is that this "oh shiny" trend of social networking cannot be over soon enough.

I don't see anything different either, whether I'm logged in or not. Certainly nothing that looks like the secret pic. So confused.

Actually, it does look different if you're browsing the tags. I don't have an account so I don't know what it looks like from that perspective, but instead of just scrolling through all the posts in that tag, it's putting up...previews?(I'm not actually sure what the right word is) in a grid type format.

I'm not sure yet what I think of it. I do know it takes longer to load. But I can see why people who are only on Tumblr for the pics would like it better.

I'm not seeing any changes at all either. I could see the new homepage from the secret's screencap when I was logged out though. But not when logged in. The dash and the tags look normal to me.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-18 12:50 am (UTC)(link)
I don't have a problem with the change but I don't understand it. Once I figure it out I'll decide if I like it or not.

It does make it confusing for non-tumblr'ites like me to search for good photos though.

I don't mind the setup so much. What I dislike is that layouts are no longer customizable. I love my Avengers layout. I love being able to choose a layout that is personal to me. I love setting how my journal looks. Also, I have a real difficulty reading things that are white background with black text if there is nothing to offset it. I have my journal set to be black first and then white for precisely that reason. Straight white backgrounds give me a headache because I'm partly light sensitive.

If you hate complaints like that, never go on FaceBook.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-18 02:31 am (UTC)(link)
I haven't noticed any big changes...but now I am worried

I've heard about this, and seen screenshots like the one in the picture, but I've never personally experienced this change. Posts show up normally for me.

But I'm only ever logged in, and I pretty much just look at a few fandom-related tags, so maybe that has something to do with it.

i like how you were in the lana tag uwu

(Anonymous) 2012-12-18 03:34 am (UTC)(link)
I don't mind the grid, it's pretty easy to see what's being posted under a tag, but how do you get to a post? I can't figure that out.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-18 05:09 am (UTC)(link)
I think holding shift at the same time as you mouse over/click may help? Not sure, though ... :/

(Anonymous) 2012-12-18 04:05 am (UTC)(link)
Some people on my dash have been complaining about this for as long as two months now and I still haven't seen it. I also have a script running to put tracked tags back on the dash where they belong used to be, so that might be why I haven't seen the change yet.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-18 06:12 am (UTC)(link)
Uh, have you SEEN the clusterfuck that is livejournal now?

(Anonymous) 2012-12-18 09:49 pm (UTC)(link)
Blah blah blah. They should just change the layout however they feel like and we should learn to like it.

Isn't that right, Youtube?

(Anonymous) 2012-12-19 03:19 am (UTC)(link)
I-I like the new youtube layout. It's so much easier to locate and read everything now. orz
