Wait, what?

I'm on tumblr right now, and I'm not seeing what's different? (Besides the new "better" notifications that I do not like. I'm pretty sure that's not what you're talking about, though.)

I expect they're bitching about the people who are bitching about the newest Livejournal changes. Which, if you want a Tumblr style format, then wonderful for you. But this is not a cosmetic change like the last ones were, it's a change in the way the site actually functions, which pretty much erases the reason most of us signed up in the first place. *shrug*

Nope, just Tumblr specifically. Livejournal's usability is being broken with each new update and I blame no one for complaining about that.

Tumblr benefits from the "oh shiny" approach because, unfortunately, that's what it's being geared to.

Livejournal on the other hand, is a journal service, where posts and comments are the meat of the social experience, and that attracted its mostly niche userbase. The administration is clearly pushing to change that to a Facebook-est experience, to attract a more mainstream userbase which wants that social experience. (And also because money.)

I said "Livejournal-y" -- and that's where this confusion came from? -- because there are users trying to use Tumblr as their journals of sort, and the website has never lent itself well to that use. (It can be done, sure, but it's very inconvenient as a way to get organized feedback or a discussion, like you would in Livejournal.) So they're forcing a use out of a website whose administration has never shown an interest in providing with that specific experience.

The lesson to be learned into all this is that this "oh shiny" trend of social networking cannot be over soon enough.

I agree with you in that I wish people had never *tried* to use tumblr as an alternate LJ, and that it lends itself better to pics and gifs, but the fact remains that it's the main place to find fics and discussions for some current fandoms, so the new setup makes that frustrating.

My question is, as always - why not include a toggle, so people who the new layout works for can use it, and people who could more easily browse the text-based list can do that? (I will forever adore Grooveshark for doing just this - even though, ironically, I *like* their new version and don't need to toggle back.)

Agree so hard!

One of the things I liked about tumblr was how flexible it was. If I was feeling all text-y (one of my main fandoms is pretty much /made/ of text posts, for instance, and it's very much focused only on tumblr), I could get texty; if I was feeling in the mood for fanart/gif squeeing, I could get that too.
Now it's all ... blah. Grr.
(I also find the new tags page layout very non-intuitive, for some reason, which increases my frustration greatly.)

That, I don't know. Maybe keeping both implementations working consumes too many resources inside their servers?

(Anonymous) 2012-12-18 01:25 am (UTC)(link)
I don't see anything different either, whether I'm logged in or not. Certainly nothing that looks like the secret pic. So confused.

I've seen it only once on another computer when I was logged out. IDK, I think the use of it really depends on what you're looking for, because I was specifically searching in the tag for people's experiences in a college .

Actually, it does look different if you're browsing the tags. I don't have an account so I don't know what it looks like from that perspective, but instead of just scrolling through all the posts in that tag, it's putting up...previews?(I'm not actually sure what the right word is) in a grid type format.

I'm not sure yet what I think of it. I do know it takes longer to load. But I can see why people who are only on Tumblr for the pics would like it better.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-18 01:55 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I'm logged in, and not seeing that, so I guess it's just a logged in vs. not thing.

Thank you for letting me know!

(Anonymous) 2012-12-18 03:43 am (UTC)(link)
I don't have an account either, but the thing that bugs me is that the tags I hunt through for art and discussion and stuff--and probably other tags too, just from random stuff I've looked at to check--are no longer showing up in order of the most recent posts/reblogs on a tagged topic, but rather in order of popularity/most reblogs. I lurk in a couple of fandoms whose biggest online presence is on tumblr, and this change basically squashed my ability to keep up with fandom news, because the same popular posts with thousands of reblogs hide any new art and discussion. It kind of sucks.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-18 04:17 am (UTC)(link)
Oh is that what's going on? :( I thought something was weird, but I hadn't caught on to that yet. That's....not good. Drat.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-18 05:02 am (UTC)(link)
I don't know if that's what's going on, because I've seen a few people who have accounts complain about this, and other people with accounts say they haven't noticed anything. So I don't know if it only affects social-media luddites like myself, or account-holders as well, or if it's some kind of glitch. But I've found myself spending more time in my oldest fandom partially because it has dedicated discussion boards and I can keep up with news without relying on tumblr. I liked my new fandom, though. Following discussions on tumblr was annoying, but that's where the action is. I don't want to be driven out because it's even more of popularity contest than it was already. Sorry for whining. I just keep hoping someone has a solution that doesn't involve actually getting an account, but from the sound of it even that might not be a permanent or reliable fix. Seconding your "drat."

(Anonymous) 2012-12-18 07:41 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, it's exactly the same for me. I used to browse tags for art updates and stuff and it really bums me that it's just most popular up front now. I was kinda wondering if there was a way to go back to sorting it by most recent, but I guess not.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-18 10:21 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm not seeing any changes at all either. I could see the new homepage from the secret's screencap when I was logged out though. But not when logged in. The dash and the tags look normal to me.
