A grade-A complaintbrag. Well done, OP, tell us more stories about how successful you are.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-18 12:40 am (UTC)(link)
I must be really petty because this was my first thought.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-18 12:47 am (UTC)(link)
Mine too.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-18 01:09 am (UTC)(link)
Aw yiss, humblebrag.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-18 01:12 am (UTC)(link)
I think the humblebrag / complaintbrag distinction one is an important distinction that we need to recognize

It's the difference between "I can't believe [incredibly great thing] happened to little ol' me [aren't I awesome" and "Man, [incredibly great thing] actually sucks so much, I mean, sure I'm awesome for getting there but it's actually pretty hard to be this awesome"

(Anonymous) 2012-12-18 01:25 am (UTC)(link)
Ah, okay. I've never heard of a complaintbrag before this conversation but all right! I'll go with that.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-19 09:43 pm (UTC)(link)
Definitely not a humblebrag--there's nothing humble about this secret.

Same here.

This.

and idek why OP is agonizing over having *gasp* a hobby, that happens to be online fandom related. Most people have some sort of interest outside of their job, even if their work is super important special.

I don't think it was necessarily a complaintbrag?

Honestly, this is the kind of attitude that probably makes it unlikely that OP would be open about their rl responsibilities. Everyone would accuse them of being stuck-up all the time.

Also, I have a hard time really buying that someone is "bragging" anon. What's the point if it's anon? How have you really accomplished a brag if nobody knows it's you? Especially since for all we know it might be a bald-faced lie.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-18 08:21 am (UTC)(link)
Well, I agree, but people still brag all the time on 4chan etc, so it's clearly something that people do, if they just want recognition or w/e.

And people are going to accuse them of being stuck-up, if they're being stuck-up, which OP of the secret totally is. They're not complaining about their responsibilities, they're listing all these things about how awesome they are - they got promoted really fast in their chosen profession! they have a ton of responsibility! people talk about them and they have a reputation! - and then kind of vaguely seguing into worrying about responsibility versus fandom.

If the secret had been, you know, "I have a real life, I do serious things, and fandom seems frivolous. Sometimes it seems like I'm wasting my time" I don't think people would have reacted this way - but instead it's "I HOLD THE POWER OF LIFE AND DEATH IN MY HANDS" - I mean, there's just this really overblown rhetoric about how awesome OP's job is combined with staggering condescension towards everyone else. If OP was open about it and said "I have this job and IRL responsibilities" no one would give a shit, it's them being an arrogant braggart that is leading people to rag on them. F'real.

See you are really, really exaggerating and dramatizing what OP said which leads me to believe you are not completely unbiased here, and have experience with people bragging in a way you don't like, which you may be (fairly or not) applying to OP.

Also, I tend to give people the benefit of the doubt...

(Anonymous) 2012-12-18 08:43 pm (UTC)(link)
Giving people the benefit of the doubt? That's not what the Internet is for.

sorry but there's just no way I can't read OP's secret as not bragging, and I don't know how you can.

There's no way I can read your comment as anything but extreme over-exaggeration.

Let's agree to disagree.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-19 09:42 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't see much exaggeration there, TBH. The message I took was basically the same: "I'm so good at my job that the mayor of my city approached me and asked me to be on his team. Now I work for the state governor. I'm well-known enough that people squee about meeting me at last. I'm so important, I don't see why I'm wasting my time in fandom with the rest of you Wal-Mart lifers."

The message I took was "I feel like I don't belong here because if people found out what I do they'd judge me." And they very well might. It would be almost impossible for them to mention their line of work without certain anons accusing them of being smug or bragging. You sound a little bit bitter, honestly.

Hey, I didn't read the OP as stuck up either. Just feeling lonely in their job and wishing they'd have more with fandom if they didn't feel so guilty of having such a hobby while being in such an important job. I don't think these anons realize how mean some "normal" people can be if they find out about your hobbies. I mean, I know the woman won her seat, but look at what the Republican party did to that Senator who plays WoW. They TRIED to crucify her for it, because it was "weird." Didn't work of course, cause the times are a-changin', but, that mentality is still out there.

I think that's the OP is afraid of and why they feel so guilty of having said hobby.
