But a lot of fandom people are in academia. Half the academics I know are hardcore Trekkies, and some of them even write fanfic. It's really not as uncommon as you make it sound.

Honestly, this secret strikes me as gloating about how much better you are than people with "normal" jobs.

I think there are more fans in academia/highly-educated fans than you think.

As for fans in positions of responsibility... Well, if I work as a greeter at Wal-Mart, and I accidentally out myself online as reading tons of amateur erotic fiction and dressing up in a costume, my boss probably won't be able to tell me apart from my equally faceless coworkers, and my job will be the same amount of secure as it was before (not very, but never mind that). I work as a low-level researcher in a government agency, and I'm not going to say more about it than that, because while I don't think I could get in trouble for fanfic and other copyright-questionable stuff, I can't say for sure it wouldn't happen, and I could definitely get in trouble for saying where I worked in a way that implied I was representing the agency in some way. If I held some kind of public office, I would never, ever, ever admit it online. People might manage to identify me, and then it would be open season.

A. I don't like that you're assuming that all of fandom works at Walmart and/or has no degree.

B. I don't like how you feel that somehow you're better then someone who works at Walmart and/or has no degree.

C. You do realize the "god I wish I was an adult!" Is often a tongue-in-cheek statement right? Often people who play video games and watch cartoons like to joke about how immature they are, but if you take a deeper look at our real lives we are adults who get out shit done.

We just like to get our shit done with our Maleficent figure watching over us.

ok, the arrogance in this secret aside...

being involved in fandom isn't a bad thing. most people need a hobby or something relaxing and fun to enjoy. there's nothing wrong with fandom, as long as it doesn't become your entire life. obviously in your case, your job would take priority over fandom - but that doesn't mean you can't enjoy or be involved in fandom.

That's some serious condescending tone. Like the "every day" jobs just aren't as important. I know people with that attitude--we get 'em as patrons and wish that we served food so we could spit in it. Even when they're nice about it, no one likes being considered "one of the peons" or anyone who gives off that vibe. (See: Previous Election)

The other people in your fandom talking about their so-called responsibilities is just precious, right? Because they're not Real Important Jobs, so they just Don't Know, and you feel Awful Lonely in your tower, hm?

Part of me wants to know seriously, what fandom are you in that has a dearth of academia. Mostly, though...

Maybe you should have worked a couple of low-level jobs. Just sayin'.

I was going to write a nice comment about how everyone is allowed to and should have hobbies/recreations, and the more stressful your job is the more important down-time from it becomes. But then I reread your secret and realised how dismissive you were of the jobs and education levels of your fellow fans.

'Oh, she's just a teacher and doesn't even have a Masters, he just works at Wal-Mart and couldn't afford a college education even if he wanted one, *that's* why they're in fandom, because the rest of their lives are inconsequential."

If, as you imply, your job is going to put you in a position to 'change the world' through politics, then maybe you might want to work on developing empathy for and an understanding of the diversity of your possible future constituents. A good place to practice might be with a community your part of, like, say, fandom.

Med student who knows other med students and doctors in fandom, that good enough for you? Lives in our hands and all that? I also know an architect, a lawyer, a few people with MS degrees, and others who are young but have pretty long term academic goals. Your fandom circle might just need some widening. Get a coffee mug for your show, it'll invite conversation and you'll find others like you. You're not alone, so quit pretending.

Last time I checked, teachers and librarians were required to have a masters degree. They're both careers that educate people. Educators don't "truly affect their city"? I guess yours didn't affect you much if you honestly believe those things. Unless your degree(s), education, and knowledge popped out of the womb with you and the placenta, you wouldn't be BFFs with mayors and governors now if it weren't for teachers and librarians. I suppose you think they're only good for target practice.

And working at WalMart may not require a lot of education, but it doesn't make anyone less than anyone else, either.
