This is a really good point. And it can apply to other jobs as well, I work in the entertainment industry and often jobs really need to be very "hush-hush" and you have to sign about a million nondisclosure agreements about the job and sometimes you can't even tell people you've ever worked for the company (places like Disney do this often so they don't have to tell people how much artwork they got from out-of-house.)

Some people in fandom may just not be telling you their whole life story because it could be risky for them.

Different anon

I was thinking of the same thing. I'd love to work in the entertainment industry, and the last thing I'd want is to apply with a company or network and have them see I wrote fic for a show they produced. And I definitely wouldn't want to present myself as some sort of inside source to other fans, or put myself in a position where people might see me that way.

And I'm big on privacy to begin with.

I'm suddenly in love with the idea that OP is in this fandom where OP is lamenting how only they has a real Responsibility-Level-7 job, but all the while, the rest of the fandom are all high level government workers, or high up company folks with NDA's.

Because of this comment, I had the mental image of Barack Obama writing Marvel fanfiction. And it's glorious.

(Who do you think he'd ship?)

This is a wonderful idea, I'd read fic of it! Fandom consists completely of high level undercover and secret agents. The OP is the lowest on the totem pole by comparison. We are all kick ass spies...or something...
