I think there are more fans in academia/highly-educated fans than you think.

As for fans in positions of responsibility... Well, if I work as a greeter at Wal-Mart, and I accidentally out myself online as reading tons of amateur erotic fiction and dressing up in a costume, my boss probably won't be able to tell me apart from my equally faceless coworkers, and my job will be the same amount of secure as it was before (not very, but never mind that). I work as a low-level researcher in a government agency, and I'm not going to say more about it than that, because while I don't think I could get in trouble for fanfic and other copyright-questionable stuff, I can't say for sure it wouldn't happen, and I could definitely get in trouble for saying where I worked in a way that implied I was representing the agency in some way. If I held some kind of public office, I would never, ever, ever admit it online. People might manage to identify me, and then it would be open season.

This is a really good point. And it can apply to other jobs as well, I work in the entertainment industry and often jobs really need to be very "hush-hush" and you have to sign about a million nondisclosure agreements about the job and sometimes you can't even tell people you've ever worked for the company (places like Disney do this often so they don't have to tell people how much artwork they got from out-of-house.)

Some people in fandom may just not be telling you their whole life story because it could be risky for them.

Different anon

I was thinking of the same thing. I'd love to work in the entertainment industry, and the last thing I'd want is to apply with a company or network and have them see I wrote fic for a show they produced. And I definitely wouldn't want to present myself as some sort of inside source to other fans, or put myself in a position where people might see me that way.

And I'm big on privacy to begin with.

I'm suddenly in love with the idea that OP is in this fandom where OP is lamenting how only they has a real Responsibility-Level-7 job, but all the while, the rest of the fandom are all high level government workers, or high up company folks with NDA's.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-18 05:43 pm (UTC)(link)
Because of this comment, I had the mental image of Barack Obama writing Marvel fanfiction. And it's glorious.

(Who do you think he'd ship?)

(Anonymous) 2012-12-18 06:49 pm (UTC)(link)
This is a wonderful idea, I'd read fic of it! Fandom consists completely of high level undercover and secret agents. The OP is the lowest on the totem pole by comparison. We are all kick ass spies...or something...

And if you have published anything professionally, it can get rather awkward if someone is Googling your name trying to find your article on the finer points of genetic manipulation of fluorescent proteins, and instead they find your Supernatural/My Little Pony Daycare AU fanfic.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-18 01:19 am (UTC)(link)
LOL I want that fic now.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-18 01:29 am (UTC)(link)
Word. My publications are journalistic articles and fiction, but I'm pretty sure I don't want them mixed up with my slash porn and my hurt/confort fics.

The copyright issues alone make me worry...

yeeeeeep. this is pretty much why i will never use my real name/identifying info anywhere near fandom...

(Anonymous) 2012-12-18 05:48 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, isn't that the point of pseudonyms? Although, true mastery would be to include excerpts of the fic in the article. Nobody actually reads the data results section, right? :)

(Anonymous) 2012-12-18 06:55 pm (UTC)(link)
Sometimes it feels like not even the reviewers bother reading that section, so why not. Or put something in the acknowledgements, people have thanked their cats there for the hell of it.

Greeters are very rarely younger people, just so you know. Though I find the thought of an elderly woman/man reading erotic FF between breaks rather amusing.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-18 01:05 am (UTC)(link)
I find it plausible.

This. Lots of older people are into porn, they just don't talk about it.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-18 02:11 am (UTC)(link)
Off the top of my head I know four people over the age of fifty who are heavily into fic-porn - writing, reading, discussing.

And I'm sure as the years pass, that number will only skyrocket.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-18 07:30 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, do you? Because only "younger people" are allowed to be interested in sex?

Bollocks.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-18 01:32 am (UTC)(link)
Indeed. I work very, very hard to keep my professional and fandom life separate - not only for my own protection and reputation, but also out of respect to my coworkers and colleagues. Since fandom is part of my personal life, I see no problem keeping it private (and in fact, I don't want to think about work when enjoying my hobbies!). Apparently, OP thinks just because I don't put "By the way, I'm in academia and have published in leading scientific journals, so you know this slash PWP is going to be hot AND biologically accurate" in my disclaimers, that means I do nothing responsible with my life.

"By the way, I'm in academia and have published in leading scientific journals, so you know this slash PWP is going to be hot AND biologically accurate"

I'd like to read all fics with that disclaimer. No lie.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-18 03:34 am (UTC)(link)
What about the ones by people who've published in leading physics or chemistry journals and know fuck-all about actual biology?
