There are lots of 'academics' in fandom, and lots of government workers, and pretty much any other job you can think of. You're not special. People have hobbies, and one hobby is fandom.
And I didn't really see anyone else in the thread say so, so I'm gonna say it: I think it's kind of gross that you just brushed off 'school stuff' like it's this nonchalant thing. Idk what you got a degree in, but I can tell it's not in a STEM (science (including medicine), technology, engineering, mathematics) field because you wouldn't just brush off 'school stuff' as some baby thing if it was. High school students preparing to be in one of those fields, and college students working towards their degrees are some of the hardest working people I've ever met. Engineering degrees? Are kind of designed to kill the weak.
And personally I feel brushed off by this comment. Just because I am a student in fandom doesn't mean I'm not a responsible adult. I save during the summer and I'm working my entire Christmas break so I can buy rent and food and pay for other expenses next semester. Other than a very small portion of my student loans which are under my parent's name, I am entirely self sufficient on the money that I make, the loans that I have, and the scholarships I receive. I only don't work during the semester because I'm training under a mentor unpaid and my major is biochemistry. Sometimes I fuck up or put things off, and my corner of the apartment's a mess, but on the whole I feel like I qualify as a 'responsible adult.'
