Why? I'm not in the habit of doing things because people tell me to. I'd like to know why you think it's a must-read.

Oh, can't you go and look it up for yourself? The book even has a website: http://nothingtoenvy.com/

Orrr OP could say something about the book other than "Read it" so people can decide if they want to, rather than wasting their time on something uninteresting.

You're on F!S! Your time as already been wasted. Check the website, it has a synopsis of the book.

You're being a bit silly imo, but I still like this line. Thanks for the laugh. (And it is true...)

DA- the website has an excerpt and there are typos in it. The book is definitely not worth reading and OP is a moron.

"Sometimes a group of teenage boys would career into her path trying to knock her off the bicycle."

Based on the website, that doesn't look like a very good book at all, tbh. What did you like about it? Why do you recommend it? You might want to link people to the amazon page because it includes actual reviews of the book and even the opportunity to look inside so readers can determine if the like the author's writing style or not. Much better than READ IT!!!!!

I'm reading the preview right now and imo it's pretty good.

What's so great about it? The story? The writing style? I can read the official summary but that doesn't actually explain why I should read the book. You're really not compelling me to read this at all by just saying "Read it!" like a small a child demanding a bedtime story.

From reading the preview on Amazon, I can tell you that the writing has an excellent flow and stunning imagery that makes it hard to put down. It seems to be a pretty unique book, the author spoke in depth to six defectors from North Korea. That's not an experience you often get to hear about; most of what I've read about North Korea involves going into the country and kind of examining it, and only being able to talk to people who aren't really allowed to speak honestly.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-18 05:08 am (UTC)(link)
So it's the novelty of hearing the truth from North Koreans? (that probably sounds so snarky and sarcastic but I really don't mean it that way. I would reword it if I could think of a way to do it. It is a very genuine though poorly worded question)

Re: Nothing To Envy: Real Lives In North Korea

(Anonymous) 2012-12-18 05:25 am (UTC)(link)
Hmm, I wouldn't say novelty. It's just more personal than say, something focused more on politics or history. I read a little bit more and the beginning is about a woman who had to leave her boyfriend behind when she defected. But then it shifts to the boyfriend's POV which I don't really like, but I'm assuming it's factually correct based on what the woman told the author. I stopped reading because there are pages missing from the preview and that made it hard to follow.

If you don't like creative nonfiction and/or you're not interested in this topic, you probably won't be interested in it.

This is the worst book recommendation ever. Seriously, did you ever have to do a book report as a kid? Did you pass first grade? Don't go into advertizing because you really suck at it.

That was my only comment on this thread. I'm sorry if I didn't check in on F!S early enough for you. But I'm not really. OP's post sucks and they should be aware that more than one person thinks so. This community would really suck if every recommendation were like this one.

Did anyone actually think lives in North Korea were something to envy? North Korea seems to be one of the few countries that just about every other country agrees is loony. --I'm in the U.S., so obviously I have a biased viewpoint, but I've never heard anyone argue that North Korea is a super-awesome place to live.
