"Character X or Character Y?"

(Anonymous) 2012-12-18 01:01 am (UTC)(link)
Does anyone else hate these kinds of fandom bitchfights with a blinding passion? Where two characters who are perceived as competing (whether they compete at all in-universe or not) as, say, two possible candidates to get the guy/girl, two characters who have a similar role, a predecessor and a successor, two separate bffs of the main character, two prominent characters with contrasting personalities/ideologies, the only two girls in the cast, the only two guys in a cast, a husband and wife or boyfriend and girlfriend?

And then the fans find the need to pick sides and declare that they like X "over" Y, etc, for no reason?

What are some examples of this mentality in fandom that has really bugged you?

I really hate it when anti-Skub people get all angry about Skub, when really Skub is pretty awesome and great.

Damn Skub haters.

Pretty much the only thing a lot of comics readers agree on regarding the many people who have been Robin is that Jason Todd was an annoying little shit and pretty much the whole readership in the 80s wanted him dead.

And don't get me started on the Hal Jordan vs. Kyle Rayner arguments. If Green Lantern was as big then as it is now, the reaction to v3 #50 might have resulted in small-scale rioting.

People who say Lily should have chosen Snape over James.

Yes. They. Still. Exist.

Try liking all three characters in fandom while being okay with both James/Lily AND Snape/Lily. See how long you last in any fandom thread.

Preferring one of those ships over the other isn't okay to you?

It doesn't mean you have to take sides and hate the other character or hate that ship or whatever.

Oh, preferring one is fine. But there's this group of Snapefen that insist that canon Lily should have went with canon Snape over canon James and decry James as a horrible person overall, and say terrible things about Lily because she picked James instead.

And unfortunately they've completely ruined any chance of me ever wanting anything to do with Snape/Lily.

Well, yeah, I mean, *that's* obnoxious. It's not what you said, though. I like Snape/Lily and have had an experience (here on f!s) that makes me kind of afraid to say I like it because people will interpret that to mean I'm a horribly misogynist piece of shit. And I'm not saying she "should" have gone for Snape (that's...such a weird thing to say? canon would literally be completely different and besides, it's Rowling's story, not anyone else's) but I like exploring, what would have happened if she had? and talking about it.

Also I think James was just as douchey as Snape and I don't think there's anything wrong with pointing that out.

So when I see comments like yours (and I do every now and then) it makes me think that fandom is hating on that ship and its shippers to a waaaay unnecessary degree and will interpret anyone who says "I like Snape/Lily" in such a way that they automatically assume they have the attitude you outlined in this comment.

The thing with Harry Potter fandom is that if you like the same ship as a bunch of vocal people who like it, there's...not much you can do about it. I meant with my initial comment people who say horrible things about Lily (hence the 'should have chosen' phrasing) I didn't mean all Snape/Lily shippers; sorry about that since it seems I wasn't clear enough.

I used to like Harry/Hermione a great deal in fact and...yeah. I'll still read it, I just...don't like to bring it up.

How is that my problem, though, or any shipper's problem? It's not my fault people can't disassociate me from another entirely different person/group of people who happen to have one opinion partly in common with me.

Disclaimer: I've never really been in the HP fandom beyond reading the occasional fic and having convos about it here, so.

Re: "Character X or Character Y?"

(Anonymous) 2012-12-19 03:17 pm (UTC)(link)
No, it's not your fault. It's just...what happens. Particularly in HP fandom.

That's largely because the HP fandom has been (and in some parts still is) party to several large completely whackadoodle groups invested in certain pairings/characters. The original ones were the Harmonians (Harry/Hermione), and in some parts of the net you just do not mention shipping that at all, because it immediately invokes the reputation duly earned by that vocal group. The 'my ship should be canon, all Weasleys should die, Ginny was feeding Harry love potions and Ron becomes a Death Eater' people.

Ever since Book 7, there have been Snape fans saying terrible things about Lily and saying she should have loved him as if she was a prize to be earned or something. They've earned...somewhat of a reputation themselves. I'm pretty sure they've been written up on one of the fandom_wank or related comms on JournalFen at least once or twice. It's a spectacular fandom for wank at any time, really.

Now I'm sorry for bringing this up. It feels like some kind of sin to explain how messed up HP fandom is, particularly in regards to shipping.

The FrUK vs. USUK ship war in Hetalia fandom is like this for me. There are too many wanky asshats on both sides who seem to be too stupid to get that all they're acomplishing is to make everyone look bad.

Happens all the time in the Warriors fandom, like on the subject of Squirrelflight choosing Brambleclaw over Ashfur.

Urgh, Ashfur fans...

Any and all ship wars. They just annoy me. Also, recently, the way people use fake social justice to fight ship wars.

+ infinity to people using fake social justice to fight their ship wars. I hate it, and it's everywhere.

THIIIIIIIS. Someone shipping something you don't ship is NOT HURTING YOU OR YOUR SHIP. If you don't like their ship, just ignore them. And don't act like you're ~oppressed~ because someone has a different opinion on a pairing than you, god damn.

I get really pissed when people feel the need to make their favorite characters into a competition. Oh no, it's not enough that Bob and Charlie's friendship is your favorite, you have to write an essay explaining why Charlie is a superior friend than Dave on multiple levels and that's why you like them better. Or oh no, you can't stay "omg I love Alice so much!", you have to compare and contrast everything about her with Carol and show why Alice is so much better to justify your love. Akjgsdfkjghkegurbiurhiufhfgjkl

On the other hand, shipping wars just make me laugh gleefully and I get a huge kick out of the wank that ensures. Overexposure, mayhaps?

Cabot vs. Novak in SVU. They were the two main ADAs (there have been others, but fandom doesn't pay them any attention) and it almost seems like a fandom requirement to constantly shit on one in order to prove your love for the other.

Rose vs Martha. JFC, what a mess.

Re: "Character X or Character Y?"

(Anonymous) 2012-12-18 02:50 am (UTC)(link)
Oh GOD that wank. I especially loved (/sarcasm) how it was impossible to say "eh, I just liked Martha more" or "hm, Rose's just more enjoyable to me." Nope. It had to be a value judgment. Either a value judgment of the character's worth as a human being if you were being honest, or the character's importance and centrality and effectiveness as an aspect of the plot and mythology if you were being passive-aggressive.

Ditto on all the 10 vs 11 (and back in the day, the 9 vs 10) whinefests.

Re: "Character X or Character Y?"

(Anonymous) 2012-12-18 02:28 am (UTC)(link)
I've really never understood this "THERE CAN ONLY BE ONE" mentality. People have multiple important relationships and friendships irl, so why wouldn't that be the same for fictional characters? In fact, I'd worry about any character that only had one close friend/important relationship/whatever in their life because that is just not healthy.

Also, differences are good, and someone liking something you don't like doesn't make them wrong, it just means they have a different opinion. "Proving" that your fave character or bromance or ship or whatever is "better" doesn't in any way make your opinion any more valid. It just makes you look like an asshole.

I don't give a shit about ship wars because I don't go into fandom discussions, but holy crap, I hate, hate, hate 'secondary character bashing'. In which the hypotenuse's characterisation is completely destroyed in fic just so the author's favourite ship or character can look at you. I will forever be pissed about how Arwen and Boromir are treated in Aragorn/Legolas fics. THOSE ARE MY FAVOURITE CHARACTERS, DAMN IT.
