It's definitely wanky, but I've seen worse. Sherlock, Teen Wolf, HP... yeah, there's definitely worse out there.

[personal profile] atgdng 2012-12-18 01:52 am (UTC)(link)
Really? Teen Wolf? I've been lurking around for a while and honestly thought it was the most wank-free fandom I've ever seen.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-18 02:02 am (UTC)(link)
It seems wank free at first, but it's really not. I've never seen so much whining and histrionics and demanding ass fans, and that is coming from someone in SPN fandom.

(Also, there are quite a few wanky ppl from SPN who made the transition to TW after season 6 and 7 of SPN.)

[personal profile] atgdng 2012-12-18 02:05 am (UTC)(link)
Damn. Well, I'll just keep lurking where I have been, then, since it seems pretty sane. o_0

(Anonymous) 2012-12-18 02:07 am (UTC)(link)
If you've found a good corner, I'd say definitely stay there. Don't get me wrong, there are some great parts to the fandom and some super awesome people, but it's best to skirt the edges. Lol.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-18 02:06 am (UTC)(link)
It can get pretty wanky if you say something against Sterek or Jeff Davis.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-18 01:54 am (UTC)(link)
Oh come on. Teen Wolf? I won't deny the show has had its fair share of wank, but worse than SPN? Not even close.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-18 02:00 am (UTC)(link)
It's a new fandom so it hasn't had as long, but I'd definitely say for the amount of time it's been around it has an equal level of wank, given all the shit that fans pull on both one another and the creators.

I would definitely say the TW fandom is worse than the SPN fandom. At least the SPN fandom can admit it's full of wank. The TW fandom seems to be under a delusion that it's the "nicest fandom ever", which it really, really isn't. Well, it might be, if Sterek is your OTP, Stiles is your favourite character (usually for reasons that have no grounding in canon whatsoever), and Jeff Davis is your god.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-18 02:51 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, no. Call me when Teen Wolf develops a group like the spn_anon insanity. Not saying all the SPN fandom is like that, but that kind of thing is what's made SPN so notorious, above and beyond.

And I'm not defending Teen Wolf - the "nicest fandom ever" thing is a bit delusional. And they do have a bad case of group-think. But from where I'm standing it's still just the plain ordinary wank that most fandoms will end up having. SPN is still in a class of its own.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-18 12:53 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't know. I think declaring that your preferred ship is a "gay rights issue," and that if it doesn't become canon then it means that the show's writers are bigots, and then doing everything you can to pressure the writers into making it canon...is pretty crazy.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-18 01:28 pm (UTC)(link)
It's happened in both Star Trek and Merlin fandoms and probably others that I'm not aware of....probably Sherlock fandom too. Teen Wolf fandom isn't quite the special snowflake that everyone seems to want to believe. It's just a little higher profile right now. But the campaign to make Kirk/Spock canon has been going on for years. So.

And while I understand why people don't like it, it is still not crazier than some of the stuff the SPN fandom has pulled. The unending unrelenting female character hate. The J2 tinhatting (to the extent of getting mad at Jared when he and his wife announced they were having a baby). The hate and attacks of the actors' wives. The Wincest vs Destiel ship war. Sam girls vs Dean girls. Etc. Etc. Etc.

maybe they have more wank, but i haven't seen a fandom that had such a complete lack of boundaries for actors and people involved with the show. there are so many horror stories, the amount of harassment they (and their families) get is what i think makes them the worst :/

(Anonymous) 2012-12-18 01:55 am (UTC)(link)
From what I've heard, Merlin gets close.

[personal profile] rivia 2012-12-18 01:59 am (UTC)(link)
yeah i'm not really involved/pay any attention to merlin much anymore, so that might be why i hadn't heard anything about that. i wouldn't be very surprised though.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-18 02:06 am (UTC)(link)
Teen Wolf is getting there, considering some fans broke into one of the actor's houses a few months back. I think in both cases, part of the reason is that the actors are all pretty accessible to the fandom, and some people assume that a celeb tweeting you or having a photo op with you means they're you're BFF. And just... no. They're awesome to talk to and interact with fans, but they are not your friends and their personal lives are really not your business. Stop being creepy assholes. :|

[personal profile] rivia 2012-12-18 02:16 am (UTC)(link)
omfg what i hadn't heard that D: who's house was it that was broken into?

yeah i agree that's definitely part of it. plus the bubble effect that fandom has where people just forget that some stuff just isn't okay. like the fan who wanted someone to sign some slash fanart (that they didn't even draw) at a convention. or the person i used to be friends with on lj who was debating pics she got from hacking (or knowing somebody who did) an actor's close friends facebook, and so on. some people just seem to lose all ability to tell what's crossing a line, they're the ones who are just embarrassing.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-18 02:37 am (UTC)(link)
Stephen Lunsford (the dude who played Matt). Also, some creepy girl got his phone number and was pretending to be Colton to try and get him to come over? SO SKEEVY.

It's so true! Luckily, I do usually see people who will step up and be like "NO, WTF IS WRONG WITH YOU. STAHP." when people pull shit like that, but guys... seriously. How would you react if someone was like "HERE SIGN THIS PICTURE OF ART OF YOU NAKED WITH YOUR CO-WORKER." Most of the actors are good about having a sense of humor about things, but you can take them too far. Like the people who were talking about asking Hoechlin in a panel sometime about whether or not Derek has a knot on his dick. Ugh, people. *facepalms*

That's happened in other fandoms. I think the most famous example I've heard of was in the LotR fandom. Not that it makes it OK. It is DEFINITELY NOT OK. But it's not like Teen Wolf fans are the first to ever pull this kind of stuff.

When I was in SGA fandom I remember hearing about some fan that stalked Joe Flanigan and found his house - I think he ended up moving because of it.

ohhh i had a feeling it'd be stephen because he definitely seems to be the most interactive of the cast (i follow him on tumblr, he cosplays, ugh i love it) but oh god D:

oh good god noooo i really don't blame tyler h. for pulling away from twitter/etc for a while, that's just... i hatehatehate how fandom has become such a known thing now, WHY CAn'T WE JUST GO BACK IN THE DARKNESS OF OUR BLANKET CAVES and never have to be acknowledged by the show/crew everrrrr

"debating pics she got from hacking (or knowing somebody who did) an actor's close friends facebook"

Was that the Hiddleston one? I hope there weren't two incidents of this kind of asshattery.

Sounds a lot like the Hiddleston one to me and some of his fans are... WOW. O_O They aren't just after him, they'll go after his co-stars to get to him.

It's getting fucking embarrassing to follow some parts of this fandom. There's this compulsive need to name every single project as "Sterek", even though they could easily include all of the fandom with simple "Teen Wolf". Like this help the wolves thing that's going on. It would be a great idea, but I'm not going to touch it with a stick.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-18 02:48 am (UTC)(link)
Holy shit thiiiiiis. I actually was really excited at the idea of sending cookies to the cast and about the charity auction, but both times they've been attached to the fucking Sterek campaign B.S. Everyone is a fan of the show Teen Wolf, but NOT everyone is a fan of the pairing Sterek. It would make more sense to go with the label that's more inclusive (and actually the name of the show), no?
