Are there good corners of SPN fandom, though? Because I've been desperately looking for some good SPN blogs to follow on tumblr and pretty much every single one of them is at some point full of disgusting hate for some of the characters. It's like SPN fandom is incapable of just not talking about the characters they dislike instead of mentioning in every second post how XYZ is THE WORST EVER.

I find it's best if you can find people who are multi-shippers or non-shippers and who post a lot of Team Free Will stuff. In my experience, you're less likely to find hate that way. They're hard to find sometimes, though, since there are so many SPN fans on Tumblr, and a lot of the "bigger" or more well-known blogs are people who are big fans of a certain character or a certain ship. Most of the people I follow I know off of Tumblr, so I kind of had a built in corner of awesome going into things. Lol.

I suppose it doesn't help that I'm a John fan and even a lot of nice blogs who don't have any ship wank still have total hate-ons for John and like to write tags about how he was the worst father in the history of humanity.

Augh, that sucks. I really don't get all the worst father ever crap that keeps going around about John. I mean, yeah, he was far from perfect, but I don't know how anyone can deny that he loved his sons and did what he could to protect them (or at least what he thought was protecting them). Hell, the dude SOLD HIS SOUL to save Dean and helped them defeat Azazel after he climbed out of Hell. Those are not the actions of a man who doesn't love his kids. Probably doesn't help that the show was kind of heavy-handed on propping Bobby up by making John look bad for the last two seasons, either, though. I like Bobby and his relationship with the boys and all, but ugh. You don't have to make him look better by shitting on John. :/

THANK YOU. I thought I was the only person who was really pissed off by the show playing up Bobby as the good father figure and John as the bad father figure. Bobby was great, there was no need to shit all over John to make Bobby look better. The worst thing is that it ruined Bobby for me. And of course fandom was greedily eating up every mention of how HORRIBLE John was. Because it's not like that contradicts in any way the John we actually saw on the show.

You're definitely not alone! It didn't ruin Bobby for me (although bringing him back as a ghost in the clumsy way that they did kind of did, and I am totally okay with him being dead now :|), but it was endlessly frustrating. I think John would have been more than willing to admit that he did screw up some things when it came to his kids, but he wasn't an evil monster or the worst parent ever. Hell, one of the major themes of the show is that EVERYONE screws up majorly at some point, but that doesn't make them irredeemable.

And I just have to say, the scene with John talking to Sam just before he dies, and then the one with Sam telling young!John how much he loved his dad break my heart every time I watch them. Every. Single. Time.

spn_meta on LJ has a lot of interesting and non-hateful meta, ah ha, on episodes and such, and all_spn is full of squeeful little things (and some spoilery things, but always marked).

Also, missyjack does actual interviews with writers and other behind-the-scenes people of the show, and has a lot of fun, squeeful things up on her lj all the time.

If you're a John fan, go read dodger_winslow on LJ - she luffs John hard-core. Most of her fic is John-centric or John-friendly if he's not the 'main' guy. She's not writing recently, but she has fic and meta and such on her lj.

It's not really a blog so much as recaps, but try caffienekitty on LJ. Her posts are hilarious and thoughtful - and though she's not afraid to mention when something needs to be improved, she still seems to be genuinely enjoying the show and curious about where it's going, a refreshing change from the general 'THIS SHOW SUCKS WILL IT NEVER DIE' attitude.

I don't consider myself a part of the fandom anymore although I occasionally read and write and episode review. I'd be happy to talk with you about the show if you're interested, and I generally like all the characters (although full disclosure, I am not really enjoying this current season).

I lurk in spn_party on lj and the people in they make a good attempt to be wank free. Sadly, you are going to be hard pressed to find something 100% wank free.

However, most of the posters are Cas and Destiel fans, if that's not your thing, you may feel left out. It isn't that they hate on other characters, but they like you more if you like Cas or ship Destiel. It is kind of cliquey in that respect.

Spn_party is definitely cliquey and there is a discernible undercurrent of Sam hate. Well, maybe not Sam hate so much as rather blatant Dean favoritism. So while they admirably try to control wank, it is not the welcoming environment that they like to pretend they are.

Yeah, if you've never seen the show and just read that comm, you would think that Sam was some sort of random recurring character, and the show centered on Dean and Cas.

I do think one of their mods is (or was) active on here, so I feel like I'm being rude by shit talking them. So I'll just say that while they are low on the wank-o-meter, I'm not comfortable with the tone of cliqueness that hinders them from being a good comm to feel comfortable being a part of.

There was the opposite problem before the old comm shut down, since a lot of the mods were pretty big Sam fans and there was some shittiness about Cas/toward Cas fans as a result. Both comms are (or were, in the case of the old comm) pretty wank free compared to most places, but I do agree there is a definite cliquey vibe. I think a lot of it is just due to the mods being fans of certain characters themselves, hence the comm tending to attract people who are fans of the same characters.

See, but that's actually the problem. You have to find "like minded" fans to hang around with. If you're a Cas fan, you have to find a Cas- fan place. If you're a Sam girl, you have to fins other Sam girls. The different groups can not meet anywhere because they can never interact, ever, without wank.
