I don't automatically assume that people are lying if they say they're asexual, but I do think it's become trendy for the reason you said. There's too much virgin-shaming out there (and slut-shaming as well, of course, so you really can't win) and it makes sense to me that some people would go "yeah, well, I've never been with anyone because I don't WANT to." And in some cases there's sort of an air of superiority to it, like "most other people are controlled by their sexual desires and make dumb choices because of it, but I'm above all that." That part I don't like.
