Yeah, but if you put in the time to make a costume that good, you are a legit fan.

Maybe your fandom is cosplay itself and you don't care that much for whatever character you did, but you are unmistakably in a fandom.

The only time people should get shit is when they actually claim knowledge/experience with a fandom they don't have.

Still, I can understand the ire. I suspect most of the time you are less shallow then "cause she's not fat." despite your secrets tone. But do avoid that trap. It leaves you bitter.

To be fair, another fan could have made that costume and asked their fitter friend to wear it for a photoshoot.

Okay, but would you really see that person get dragged to a con, where they were then actually going around in it, and acting like a fan?

I find that really implausible. 99% of the time somebody is there because they want to be there, and even if they didn't make their own costume had at least some interest in wearing it.

I'm just referring to the photograph the OP used in the secret, not to actual con-goers. The girl on the right is clearly in a con setting, but the girl on the left appears to be in a photoshoot based on the lighting and background.

Why would you make that assumption, though? Lots of geeky people wear costumes for photoshoots, whether they made them or not.

Why do people put so much energy into trying to determine other peoples' motivations? Live and let live...

You know what? You're my favorite person.

True story: Last year I went to a large gaming convention and saw this skinny dude there wearing an absolutely amazing costume. I approached him, because I was wearing something from the same game, and told him his costume looked fantastic. He thanked me and said he was wearing it for a friend who was trying to build a costume-making business. He didn't know the game very well himself, but the sample costume had fit and he'd said he'd hand out cards but he'd already run out.

OH SHIT HE MUST HAVE BEEN A FAKE GEEK GUY! I SHOULD HAVE HAD HIM EJECTED FROM THE CON!

Except no, he was cool and he was having a good time and even though he didn't know the game he was still spending his day walking around in an elaborate costume, waiting in lines to get it signed, talking to fans of the game and helping out a friend in the process. Thing is, because he was a guy, I doubt anyone would question his cred. A woman doing exactly the same thing would be getting called out.
