I wouldn't be surprised if those guys are harsher on fat girls than they are with fake geek girls that are still "hot".

It doesn't have to do with body type though. That's pretty narrow-minded.

Maybe your fandom is cosplay itself and you don't care that much for whatever character you did, but you are unmistakably in a fandom.
The only time people should get shit is when they actually claim knowledge/experience with a fandom they don't have.
Still, I can understand the ire. I suspect most of the time you are less shallow then "cause she's not fat." despite your secrets tone. But do avoid that trap. It leaves you bitter.

But I think their numbers are vastly over-estimated.
Also, it doesn't really hurt anyone if you treat a "fake" geek as if she really is one, but to be constantly undermined and told that your interest in something isn't genuine...well, that does actually suck.
Also, looks are not a good criterion.
Like you, I'm a fat geek girl,ut I have this friend who is gorgeous - like, 2nd runner-up in a beauty contest type of gorgeous - and she's a total book worm, and completely obsessed by Torchwood and Doctor Who.
Judging a book by its cover is always dangerous.

The problem with the "fake geek girl" argument is that it leads to misogyny quickly and how these "fake geek girls" are preying on the poor, unsuspecting nerdy guys for attention. Which is the prime argument Nice Guys have.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-19 12:36 am (UTC)(link)Also, it's pretty easy to figure out if someone's genuinely into the movies/comics/books/video games they're portraying. Just have a (gasp) five-ten minute conversation with them. Done. Why is this such a big issue again?

(Anonymous) 2012-12-19 12:40 am (UTC)(link)so, hey, maybe there are fake geek girls (and boys) out there. but it's almost impossible to tell who is a "fake" and who's not, and caring a whole lot about it and getting stirred up with animus on account of it is, it seems to me, almost always the result of some heavy negative emotional shit on the part of the person getting angry, which doesn't really justify the action.
so tl;dr let people do what they're going to do. it's impossible to tell whether they're "fake" or "real" and I don't see any real reason to care either way. Are they a good person? Treats people decently, says interesting things? then I don't give a shit whether they're "fake" or not.

/says the 5'8", 130 lb., conventionally attractive girl who grew up with Star Trek, comic books, and other geek media courtesy of her equally geeky mother (who read the LOTR books out-loud to her kids when they were barely old enough to read independently, ffs) and older brothers

(Anonymous) 2012-12-19 12:43 am (UTC)(link)Would you consider me a fake geek girl simply because I'm not fat, or is there more to it than that? Is it only pretty girls you consider fakers? Does my not being conventionally attractive cancel out my lack of fatness? Are there other factors? Is how I dress important?
Seriously, what is the exact formula for a fake geek girl?

You are quite possibly scaring away people who may want to get into fandoms and cosplay. More people in the communities = more fannish stuff. Okay?

Second thought:
Fake Geek Girls exist. Why they do it? Attention? Fashion? Because they think it's the new cool? But it's not because x/y/z people are fat. Also I've met/seen geek girls that are really hot. Like... holy cow how do they manage a body like that?

Breaking News
(Anonymous) 2012-12-19 02:13 am (UTC)(link)Every subculture has it's poseurs. It's not special to geeks, alternative subcultures (goths, punks) have always had a weird preoccupation with weeding out the 'fakers' from the 'true goths/punks/geeks'.
Look at the other two subcultures, goths and punks; originally the were unseemly, their style unattractive. Then, punks and goths became 'in', that style became seen as fashionable. The original goths and punks were upset that their alternative subculture had gone mainstream and shunned those they felt were 'poseurs'.
Now the exact same thing happened with geek chic; hipsters especially (the uncool is cool) has causes geek fashion and culture to be in right now. Exact same thing that happened before.
It's happened with almost every subculture and it will continue to happen with alternative groups like geeks and goths. The end.
