What does it mean to be a geek though? Does one have to be a fan of entire genres, or perhaps certain media to be a "true" geek? What about people who are really passionate about one aspect of it but don't even want to bother with stuff they don't particularly enjoy?

Imo self-proclaimed "true geeks" have this self-important behaviour just reeks of elitism. I'd rather not be part of that kind of group if it means having to put up with that crap.

Personally, I think all someone has to do to be a geek is consider themselves one. You can be a sci-fi!geek or just a Doctor Who!Geek or a cosplay!geek or even a football!geek if that's how you want to identify. I consider myself a more general geek because pretty much all of my hobbies fall under the "traditional" geek umbrella, but I don't see it as an exclusive, elite fanclub, and I wouldn't want it to be.
