Personally, I think all someone has to do to be a geek is consider themselves one. You can be a sci-fi!geek or just a Doctor Who!Geek or a cosplay!geek or even a football!geek if that's how you want to identify. I consider myself a more general geek because pretty much all of my hobbies fall under the "traditional" geek umbrella, but I don't see it as an exclusive, elite fanclub, and I wouldn't want it to be.
