I will never understand why nerdy, socially awkward, average-to-unattractive geek guys think hot nerd women even care enough about them to WANT their attention.

Because obviously, women who spend hundreds of hours on fanwork and hundreds of dollars on cosplay material, merchandise and convention tickets, only do it because they want to please men. Never because they are people with interests and actually LIKE things, oh no, girls don't have personalities or likes and dislikes, that's just silly!

only do it because they want to please men

It has nothing to do with pleasing men and everything to do with pleasing their own desires for attention, sexual and otherwise. Any pleasure men gain is mostly irrelevant to a woman who is seeking this sort of attention. I'm not shaming. I've faked being interested in something to get attention from guys. It's fun.

OH MY GOD THEY WERE RIGHT. THEY WERE RIGHT ABOUT EVERYTHING.

BITCHES GET OUT MY FANDOM. I DON'T CARE HOW HOT YOU ARE COSPLAYING ROXY. OUT.

THE PATRIARCHY HAS SPOKEN.

you're a jerk.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-19 02:18 am (UTC)(link)
And that's your choice. The trouble comes from men who think every woman everywhere is doing the same thing for the same reason when it's actually a tiny, tiny minority.

Can I please, please, pleeeeeeeease ask that you try to not make it sound like all geek girls do this? Because gross. That just makes these stereotypes worse. I for one definitely do not do this and can't fathom why anyone would...

Can you please not beg another woman to be a credit to our race or some crap like that, when 1) what she's done is hardly the worst thing ever 2) what she's done is definitely not unique to women or geek women 3) what she's done and the vehement criticism of what she's done are both supported by a crapton of sexism that you seem happy to just let float on by

...?

Sorry, but your comment implies that this is a thing that women normally do, and it perpetuates a BAD STEREOTYPE that, as you can see from this entire thread-conversation, is a pervasive problem. What you are doing reflects badly on other women when you don't specify "this is just me" and make comments that make it sound like this is the normal motivation. It's also kind of a shitty thing to do, just saying.

1. lol degrees of badness ok not going there. it's still shitty
2. so?
3. What she's done is supported by sexism? huh? not sure if you meant to word that that way? re: criticism, no, my criticism of your actions is based on the fact that it's just kind of a jerk move.

Different anon

I used to work at a comic store, and I was geeky enough to do so well, but I and the other girl who worked there used to wear miniskirts at comic cons to attract attention to our table. Our boss loved it.

That isn't really what anon I replied to was talking about doing, though

+1. One thing I've noticed in all the fake geek girl rants I've seen around is the weird assumption that because the guys doing the ranting view women as ornamental, the women must therefore also view themselves as ornamental. The idea that we do things like cosplay because we enjoy them and have interests and inner lives of our own is out of the question.

sa Whoops, that tag was supposed to close after "women."

Oof. That is eloquently phrased, and perfectly sums up exactly what is so wrong with the fake-geek-girl and cosplay-hate.
