But why do people care if "fake" geeks exist? Yeah, there are posers out there (tho the number is a lot smaller than people want to pretend), but the only time someone else pretending to like something for attention might affect you is when other people feel the need to call out the so-called fakes. And even then, that's more on the people who are insecure assholes and like to make judgments about other fans' motivations and worth to make themselves feel better about their own fan-status.
