People do get paid to stand around cons in costume. However, the only person I've met who did that was also a gamer, so she's anything but fake.

I wouldn't say that people who get paid to stand around in costume are fakes of anything. They're professionals, doing their jobs, for money.

Unless the job required geek knowledge and they bluffed their way through the selection process then they're not fakes because they're neither claiming nor pretending to be geeks.

Regardless of whether they themselves are a geek or not, why is the anger always directed at them, instead of, y'know, the people who hired them and are paying them to stand there?

Good question. I'm really not liking this secret but then again I'm one of those "Why can't we all be friends, let's hug" people.

Honestly? if someone asked me to stand around in a costume I liked and paid me to do it I probably would. I could use some extra cash right now and I'd rather make it doing something I love (cosplaying, being at con, geeking out) than something boring and not at all related to my interests.

If that costume was particularly revealing, I probably wouldn't, because I'm not comfortable with that. But if someone else is, then, well, more power to them, I guess. It doesn't make them "fake" or "attention whores". oh I forgot, the whole point of having a woman's body is so men can stare, amirite

Agreed, so much. Unfortunately they usually only hire really tall girls so I'm out.
