But I think their numbers are vastly over-estimated.
Also, it doesn't really hurt anyone if you treat a "fake" geek as if she really is one, but to be constantly undermined and told that your interest in something isn't genuine...well, that does actually suck.
Also, looks are not a good criterion.
Like you, I'm a fat geek girl,ut I have this friend who is gorgeous - like, 2nd runner-up in a beauty contest type of gorgeous - and she's a total book worm, and completely obsessed by Torchwood and Doctor Who.
Judging a book by its cover is always dangerous.

I'm sure there are people who fake geekiness because it's what their friends are into/they can get attention that way/it's a good career move (for some types of artist/actor/writer)/whatever, but assuming you can tell who's who without actually talking to someone is gross. If you really want to know if that person doing the awesome cosplay of your favourite character is a "true geek" or not, come on over and engage them in conversation. You'll probably be able to tell pretty quickly if they're actually into the show.

You can generally pick out real fans from fakers (male or female) within 3 minutes of casual fandom conversation.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-19 03:15 am (UTC)(link)Imo self-proclaimed "true geeks" have this self-important behaviour just reeks of elitism. I'd rather not be part of that kind of group if it means having to put up with that crap.

Bring it on, douchey geek guys. You're going to regret it.
no subject
I'm pretty sure he regretted it. I...I can go on for quite a while about EVERYTHING Flash-Rogue related, compare Ages, and offer alternative interpretations for problematic canon. And I will at the slightest provocation.

Flash's Rogues are awesome though! You should be encouraged to educate the population on their awesomeness! :D I don't read a lot of DC (and by not a lot I mean next to none with a few exceptions) but that's a group of characters I think I could definitely read a whole lot about.

Him: *walks in*
Me: *sitting behind the counter reading a comic*
Him: So, what would you recommend? - oh wait, you don't read comics, right?
Me: *turns page* yup.

Heh. I'm more of a DC gal, or I was prior to the reboot. Flash's Rogues are the most awesome of supervillain families. There are plenty of ice/fire/toy/sonic/weather themed super-folk, but I've never seen a team quite like the Rogues.
Never did read West Coast Avengers. Though given my love a B-list superteams (like the afore mentioned Rogues, and the JLI) I probably should.

There's some... questionable stuff in WCA, but I love the characters and the dynamics (when certain archers aren't being assholes anyway).

As you say, just talking to someone can usually tell you if they're a geek or not. Enthusiasm and all that.

Thank you for wording this so well. ia 100%. also the rest of your comment, I like it.
