In addition to what everyone else has said:

1) If you want to go to a con, all you have to do is buy a membership and behave in a respectful manner while there. You do not need to be a geek. No really, you don't. I've been to cons and met children who were dragged there by their parents and parents who were only there to chaperone their kids and people who just tagged along with friends or a significant other and they have as much right to be there as anyone else. They're not causing trouble, so who cares?

2) There's nothing wrong with being a casual fan. Nothing.

I do not understand why the presence of casual fans and non-fans is so threatening to some people. Do you think the jocks are going to buy convention memberships so they can hunt you down and give you a wedgie? Are you afraid of these sexy, sexy, fake geek girls trying to get your attention because you think they're going to steal your wallet? Is it so godawful that you find yourself attracted to them?

Not only is it horrible to label women as "fake geeks" just because they don't fit a particular stereotype, but I just cannot fathom what is so awful about actual fake geeks.
