I don't like them because, first, I don't generally like high fantasy, and second, because as far as I can tell Tolkien was entirely uninterested in women. I can take stories about men (I kind of have to, what with living in the contemporary world) but stories that totally ignore my gender? Fuck them.

I'm pretty sure I'm doing it wrong.

You aren't. Tolkien is a product of his time and it is not wrong of you to find the lack of women in LotR problematic.
