Not liking LotR is only weird if you like other things that follow the same idea/exist in that genre. Not liking it in general? Sure. Not liking it while still being a fan of quest-fantasy with a medieval-type setting? I'm side eyeing you a little bit.

I mean, it makes no difference to me personally, but some people might have their reasons.

I think people just have a hard time seeing things from another person's perspective. Think about it: there's probably something that you absolutely love, right? Would it seem a little unusual if someone didn't like it? Probably at least some part of you might think so.

That being said, obviously making you sit through 9 hours of movie isn't going to change your mind. I love Tolkien and his works, but it's absolutely OK not to like his stuff, as long as you don't go out of your way to bother people that DO like it (which you don't seem to be doing at all in this secret). If you like fantasy of that genre at all, then I think it would be good for you to try to understand the impact Tolkien had on it (for better or worse), but even then I can understand why you might not like it--Tolkien wasn't flawless. He's often long-winded and sometimes allows characters to be underdeveloped (often because his casts are packed too solid--look at how many dwarves The Hobbit has!). His real strength is in his world-building, probably because the stories only started because he wanted a world to create languages in (since that was his real interest). I still adore his work because of the depth and scope of his world and the mythical feel to it, but that's a taste thing. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, and all that.

Sorry for the incoming flood of fanning over Tolkien with The Hobbit coming out in theaters. I hope people won't bother you too much.

lol. I am watching the Extended Edition of FOTR as I type.

So I laughed a bit when I saw this secret.

But if it's not for you, then it's not for you and your friends should quit bugging you.

Just don't watch them. If someone tells you that you'll love them, just say, "It's cool that you love it, but I'm not interested."

If they keep pestering you, avoid them until they learn their lesson or find different friends, I guess. That kind of thing can be frustrating.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-19 12:08 am (UTC)(link)
My best friend doesn't like them either OP, it's absolutely fine that they're not your cup of tea. You can't control what you do and don't enjoy. :)

(Anonymous) 2012-12-19 12:12 am (UTC)(link)
Well, the movies are kind of bad, so that's perfectly natural.

If you don't like the books, that's perfectly fine as well, but I think they do have a certain amount of quality regardless of your feelings about them & I also think that regarding the movies as having precedence over the books is maybe not entirely justified.

But I'm gonna say I agree with a few people above. I feel like I've said this a lot recently about a lot of different secrets. I'm starting to get tired of being reassuring.

I love them, but I wouldn't push them on people I don't think would enjoy them. Frankly, I'd rather people simply not watch them than bad mouth them because they aren't like Harry Potter or some such nonsense.

But I feel for you anon. It's annoying when you come across people who genuinely think that everyone should enjoy the same things as they do, the same way as they do. It's like arguing with a rock.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-19 01:31 am (UTC)(link)
I don't like them because, first, I don't generally like high fantasy, and second, because as far as I can tell Tolkien was entirely uninterested in women. I can take stories about men (I kind of have to, what with living in the contemporary world) but stories that totally ignore my gender? Fuck them.

I'm pretty sure I'm doing it wrong.

Because people are asses when someone doesn't like something that's ~wildly popular~. I've been through that, though it was with Dr. Who instead of LOTR

(Anonymous) 2012-12-19 01:40 am (UTC)(link)
I've ended two friendships over this. I don't care what other people like but this is one of those things that people seem to feel the need to nag and pester and bitch about. It's disrespectful in the extreme. I've seen a great deal of all three movies and I just don't like them. If people can respect that, we're fine. If they try to change my opinion, I won't have anything to do with them.

i've never heard about extended editions or a director's cut completely (180º style) changing a person's feelings about a film.

I don't care if people don't like the things I do. No sensible person should. In fact, I live in a very hipster area, and they discourage people liking the same stuff they do.
Overenthusiastic fans are annoying for sure, but the people who are the biggest idiots are haters. Why spend so much time bitching and actively being part of a fandom you hate? If you don't like something (fandom wise) just don't take part. People can't force you to read a book or watch a movie.
Yeah, 'friends' can nag you, but ignore them or get less annoying friends.

I don't understand people.

The movies are pretty, but problematic if you're a fan of the books, and the books are... well, it took me taking a class on fantasy literature to get through them the first time. (I've read them many times since, but that's another story.) They're not for everyone. That said, I've known people who didn't like them at one age who loved them later. Me included. Years from now, when you haven't got anyone pushing you, if you find yourself curious, go ahead and take another look. You might go "meh" and you might not.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-19 02:58 am (UTC)(link)
I love the movies, read the books but found them to be a victim of the time they were written. I prefer much more emphasis on characters and dialogue than one could find in them.

Of course it's rude if people won't stop pestering you about it, or if they scorn you for not liking it, but they might mean the best. I know if I really really love something, I want my friends to be able to experience it too, so there might be some of that. ^^
