Not liking LotR is only weird if you like other things that follow the same idea/exist in that genre. Not liking it in general? Sure. Not liking it while still being a fan of quest-fantasy with a medieval-type setting? I'm side eyeing you a little bit.

I mean, it makes no difference to me personally, but some people might have their reasons.

Actually, no, it's not weird to only dislike LotR. It's a matter of execution, and Tolkein could be wordy and those songs he kept putting in were a chore to read.

I thought we were talking about the movies, not the books? Either way, I agree with the idea that it's certainly possible to love fantasy/questy things and not like Lord of the Rings. Maybe they're too long, or the separation of the fellowship past the first one bothers people, or really, any number of resons.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-19 02:54 am (UTC)(link)
agreed. just because someone likes fantasy doesn't mean they MUST love lotr. there are plenty of things one might like or dislike about something. it's up to personal taste.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-18 11:52 pm (UTC)(link)
Why? Personally, I dislike LOTR because of the writing style. I need books where the plot actually moves. The endless pages of descriptions and all the pointless sidetracking throws me out of the books. I can see why they are considered great books, but they are just not for me. And I like other quest-fantasy books.

This.

There's nothing about the books or the movies that grips me even though I love fantasy and devoured The Hobbit. I fought my way through the first book, gave up half-way through the second and stopped trying after the first few pages of the third. I'd go even further than you and say that LotR bored me to tears. Towards the end I used to read it at night to help me fall asleep.

Boredom was my reaction to the books as well: none of the characters clicked for me.
~ The movies were glossy, but I've been told the things I actually found slightly interesting were inventions just for the movie.

I just take the route of "Keep quiet and don't crap on anyone else's squee" when the topic of how great LotR is comes up.

I fought my way through the first book, gave up half-way through the second

This is me. And the only part of the books that I enjoyed (the bits with Tom Bombadil) are almost universally loathed by the actual fandom.

Oh well. *shrugs*

And I struggled all the way through The Hobbit, too. Seriously!

Reading should not be a chore.

100% yes.

I can't stand the writing style. At all. And holy crap, never try to read through Silmarillion if you don't like LotR, it's such a slog.

Lord of the Rings is my favourite book, and even I was going, "Get to the POINT!" in parts, so yeah. You can love the genre but find Tolkien an absolute chore, it doesn't make you any less of a fantasy fan. Tolkien wasn't exactly known for being concise!

(Anonymous) 2012-12-19 02:56 am (UTC)(link)
This. I do like Tolkien's lighter books, The Hobbit, Father Giles of Ham and such, but LOTR, read it once, liked the plot but don't feel the need to slog through that again. It's right up there with Victor Hugo's work in my mind, you know, lots of words getting in the way of the story.

Mmm...Anon, do you consider Game of Thrones to be in the same ballpark of LOTR?

I wanted (and tried) to read LOTR because I do like the idea and genre, only to find I couldn't handle Tolkien's writing. GRRM might be just as verbose, but at least it's towards thing I find interesting and not aimless wandering a lot of the time.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-19 12:52 am (UTC)(link)
(Different anon)

ASOIAF and LOTR are some of the best in the fantasy genre, but they're very different beasts. ASOIAF is more character-driven, and is far more gritty and realistic than LOTR, which reads like a mythology. LOTR is considered the genre-defining work, but ASOIAF plays with and subverts genre conventions.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-19 06:21 pm (UTC)(link)
Do you mean GRRM's books with his plotwise important recital of as much different turtles as possible, his page upon page of different foods or the aimless wandering of his characters who never reach their destination?
Yeah, I find this really interesting too - it's especially interesting because in GRRM's books the aimless wandering is still happening and there is no end in sight! I'm so disappointed that Tolkien finished the aimless wandering of his characters (who even reach their destination) if you can write more books like GRRM with so much more aimless wandering!

He may have finished but the way he wrote it made me not care to continue after the first, so...

(Anonymous) 2012-12-19 09:20 pm (UTC)(link)
Ahm, isn't GRRM famous for writing anything (especially food + aimless wandering) but plot?

Admittedly I skipped Bran and Jon chapters after the third book, but I find the rest tolerable, especially Brienne.

What about Skyrim (and by extension, the Elder Scrolls series)? I know it's a video game and therefore probably doesn't count, but it's one of the only quest-fantasy-type thing I've ever been able to get into (the other being Dragon Age, but just Origins) and I can't explain why.

lol what?

some high fantasy isn't totally dull like Tolkien is. There's your mystery solved.

Lol but

(Anonymous) 2012-12-19 02:31 am (UTC)(link)

Skyrim and the Elder Scrolls series in general is/-are- totally dull, sry2say. In part because of the vaguely non-linear storyline that basically equates to pointless level grinding and no real cohesive storyline. Pretty doesn't cut it. About the only thing Bethesda has done right recently is Dishonored, and even then they were merely the publishers. Which is probably what they should stick too, as storytelling is not their strongsuit.

Why? Maybe you don't like the characters? Maybe you think it's too slow? There are plenty of reasons you could dislike LotR but like other things in the same genre.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-19 12:43 pm (UTC)(link)
What? So...if someone enjoys a particular genre, then that person must enjoy every single iteration of that genre?

Because all medieval fantasy is LOTR.

Haha.
No.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-19 04:18 pm (UTC)(link)
Some of us just think Peter Jackson is a hack, and that's a totattly separate issue from how I feel about fantasy or other epics.
