This.

There's nothing about the books or the movies that grips me even though I love fantasy and devoured The Hobbit. I fought my way through the first book, gave up half-way through the second and stopped trying after the first few pages of the third. I'd go even further than you and say that LotR bored me to tears. Towards the end I used to read it at night to help me fall asleep.

Boredom was my reaction to the books as well: none of the characters clicked for me.
~ The movies were glossy, but I've been told the things I actually found slightly interesting were inventions just for the movie.

I just take the route of "Keep quiet and don't crap on anyone else's squee" when the topic of how great LotR is comes up.

Well, you know, movies have to have an actual plot and stuff...

*snerk* I admit the two things I found most powerful/memorable were the Helm's Deep stuff - which was truly epic looking - and Arwyn raising the river to drown the Nazgul. I was told the latter was a mashup of a minor scene in the book involving a male character (it's been a very long time since I read the books.)

It probably wouldn't have been a good idea to try to film the books "as is" - the cast would have been enormous, the story way too twisty. I'm sure there are people who like both ( or neither) and I'm cool with that. But like the OP said, it's tough when you have friends who don't understand why you're not worshipping at all the same altars as they are.

P.S. Craig Parker? Way hotter an elf than Bloom. :p

LOL!

Oh, I'm sure.

Who's Craig Parker? LOL, I'm so lost.

He played Haldir, the leader of that troop of elven archers that marched in before the battle started. (I could probably dig up a screen shot so you can go, " Oh, THAT guy!" :p)

(When I first saw the movie in the theatre I thought it might be Jason Isaacs (aka Luscious Lucius) and was bummed not to see his name in the credits.)

Ah, OK. Once you said "Luscious Lucius", I knew who you meant. LOL!

*hehehe* yeah.

And I see from wikipedia that actually in the movie they took what Haldir did in the books and S'mored it up with another elf-whose-name=also-begins-with-H who was the actual character in the book who led the archers at Helm's Deep.

Phew. Adapting long complex books with huge worlds is a tough gig.

Ironically, all of this stuff might be why I like the movies better. I suck at being a fantasy fan, I guess.. I mean, my favorite fantasy series is The Chronicles of Narnia. :p

I don't mind big sprawly worlds with casts of dozens: if they're vividly written, it's pretty easy to keep everything sorted in your head.

However, my misty memory of LotR was that it was like reading lace. Very intricate, but after a while a lot of it blurred together. ~ Having said that, I do give the guy props for creating such an incredibly (some would say obsessively) detailed world. I don't know where LotR fits into the history of fantasy literature, but I expect that he was one of the first to be so vast.

YES! That is the perfect description!

Absolutely! Shame about it being as dull as watching paint dry.

LotR is the basis for most of modern fantasy. Dungeons and Dragons is basically the races of Middle-earth with the serial numbers rubbed off.

Actually there were no elves at Helm's Deep, they were busy defending their own lands from attacks. Also, Eomer was at Helm's Deep for the whole battle, the force that came in and helped defeat the attackers was led by a random Rohirim commander.

Random fact: I never read the Helm's Deep or Minas Tirith parts of the books until after the movies.

I fought my way through the first book, gave up half-way through the second

This is me. And the only part of the books that I enjoyed (the bits with Tom Bombadil) are almost universally loathed by the actual fandom.

Oh well. *shrugs*

And I struggled all the way through The Hobbit, too. Seriously!

Reading should not be a chore.
