i've never heard about extended editions or a director's cut completely (180º style) changing a person's feelings about a film.

Yeah, that seems like a weird argument. I like LotR, but I cannot imagine anyone who didn't like the theatrical versions changing their minds after watching the extends. I imagine they'd just be even more bored, given how much longer they are.

I haven't seen the Director's Cut of Kingdom of Heaven, but apparently that was one of the few Director's Cuts that did alter how people felt about the film. I've heard that from a lot of people, too.

This. I...enjoyed the theatrical cut of Kingdom of Heaven, but I left the movie knowing it was missing a whole lot. Seeing the director's cut (which incidentally was the cut he had wanted to release all along until he was told that no one wanted to watch a movie over a certain magical length, and to trim it) made it just amazing for me. It's one of my favorite movies. :)
