(Anonymous) 2012-12-20 01:20 am (UTC)(link)And I have to say, I completely agree with the OP.
I'm not going to lay out in detail but I've had to drop friends after they've BLATANTLY said completely offensive things about characters which yes, did REVEAL their own stance/stupidity on various issues. I actually like looking critically at even my favourite characters and hearing thoughtful discussion on them. It does not offend me personally to have these sorts of talks with people who don't share my views. But there's a difference here because there is a line that can be crossed at times which DOES reveal a particularly problematic belief/opinion of the person speaking. And heck, sometimes it's not even because I particularly like the character, but their personal reactions and responses to the character was telling about the sort of person they are. Sometimes, it would meander away from even character discussion and it was flat-out evidence of them as people. And fine, they can be that way, but I'm just not interested in surrounding myself with them any longer. I am allowed to do that.
I honestly don't see why this is an issue, F!S.
This is not a case of judging a book by it's cover and disliking it for some trivial reason. It's judging a book once you've read 7/9s of it but become so frustrated about how much of the inner content (whether you're reading between the lines or not) is just plain wrong (bigoted, ignorant, irritating, etc) so you put it down. Yeah, maybe something amazing could happen in the last 2/9 to make up for it, but let's be real, it probably won't.
I think people are simplifying it in a misinterpreted way. Because a lot of the negative responses don't seem to actually be about what the OP said AT ALL.
