(Anonymous) 2012-12-19 01:21 am (UTC)(link)OP pretty clearly stated that it would be "immature" if you didn't know "why" they disliked the character - i.e., OP does not believe you can dislike someone for not liking a character alone, but if they don't ike a character because, say, that character passionately believes that all people have equal rights and said person really disagrees with this idea, then feel free to dislike away.
All the comments seem to be "yeah, but it would be really bad to dislike someone for disliking a character if you didn't know why because it might be something innocuous!11!" which was pretty clearly ruled out in the secret.
C'mon, I expect better of you.
(Actually I don't, because f!s and reading things more than once before posting angry screeds seem to go as well together as a house and fire, but oh well, I figured it'd be mean to tell you that.)

(Anonymous) 2012-12-19 01:51 am (UTC)(link)I don't like the male lead in Burn Notice. He's fucking ass ugly. I don't give three shits if he's oscar material, he's fucking ugly. Does that make me shallow and only judge people by the way they look?
Fuck you, no it doesn't. It means that I'm basing WHAT I CONSUME FOR ENJOYMENT on aesthetically pleasing appearances. It says nothing else about me and I can goddamn assure you that if you're a friend and you start to fucking psychoanalyze me based on what I like in my television viewing? Then you can bet I don't want YOU as a fucking friend.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-19 02:15 am (UTC)(link)If 1. You just happen to know why
And 2. It's a morally displeasing reason
Then 3. It's OK to dislike someone for disliking a character.
That's it. No more, no less.
Not "I grill all my friends on why they don't like characters and FORCE THEM TO ANSWER ME or else I PULL OUT THEIR TOENAILS ONE BY ONE MUAHAHAHAHA."
And OK, you dislike him because he's ugly. Not because, say, he likes saving the world and you hate the world or something. (Idk, I know fuck all about Burn Notice, sorry.) THIS IS NOT A MORALLY DISPLEASING REASON. There is *nothing* in OP's secret that says that there's anything wrong with you for choosing aesthetically pleasing characters.
Jesus fuck, people, learn to read.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-19 02:23 am (UTC)(link)And the fact is that the people pointing that out have a valid point - it *is* hard to tell unless you know the person/their patterns well enough to come up with a plausible reason...and I'm pretty sure that situation doesn't fall into what the OP was talking about.
[Also, nice PA bit in the brackets.]

(Anonymous) 2012-12-20 01:20 am (UTC)(link)And I have to say, I completely agree with the OP.
I'm not going to lay out in detail but I've had to drop friends after they've BLATANTLY said completely offensive things about characters which yes, did REVEAL their own stance/stupidity on various issues. I actually like looking critically at even my favourite characters and hearing thoughtful discussion on them. It does not offend me personally to have these sorts of talks with people who don't share my views. But there's a difference here because there is a line that can be crossed at times which DOES reveal a particularly problematic belief/opinion of the person speaking. And heck, sometimes it's not even because I particularly like the character, but their personal reactions and responses to the character was telling about the sort of person they are. Sometimes, it would meander away from even character discussion and it was flat-out evidence of them as people. And fine, they can be that way, but I'm just not interested in surrounding myself with them any longer. I am allowed to do that.
I honestly don't see why this is an issue, F!S.
This is not a case of judging a book by it's cover and disliking it for some trivial reason. It's judging a book once you've read 7/9s of it but become so frustrated about how much of the inner content (whether you're reading between the lines or not) is just plain wrong (bigoted, ignorant, irritating, etc) so you put it down. Yeah, maybe something amazing could happen in the last 2/9 to make up for it, but let's be real, it probably won't.
I think people are simplifying it in a misinterpreted way. Because a lot of the negative responses don't seem to actually be about what the OP said AT ALL.
