Re: I had to have my dog euthanized yesterday and I'm miserable.
(Anonymous) 2012-12-20 03:22 am (UTC)(link)One of my friends' dogs had to be euthanized the other day. I, myself, have had to give the request to my vet to euthanize three of my dogs (Mom did it for two, once due to my age, once due to me having to be at work).
When I think about them, I get misty-eyed. I try to remind myself they were old, or hurting. Sometimes, that works.
It's been almost four years since I've had to make that decision, and one of my three current dogs is getting up there in age. I know I'll have to make that decision again, sometime, probably in the coming year. It's hard, and it's awful, and I know I'll miss her like crazy.
But I'm going to tell you something that's happened to me with three of the dogs I've had to let go - they came back to me. Two of them followed me on vacation, and I spotted them rolling around in a hotel lobby - and they were dogs who'd never even met. I see dog ghosts, sometimes not just my own, but other dogs - a scampering JRT, a Great Dane following a man down the street.
People who don't know me well think I'm nuts for seeing - and speaking to - these dogs I see. I always do. Because they have to be missing someone, too, to come back.
