I had to have my dog euthanized yesterday and I'm miserable.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-19 01:33 am (UTC)(link)
He was my baby, he was sick and it was time to let him go. I miss him so much that just seeing his leash and collar makes me sob. Is there anyone else on FS who recently lost a pet?

We had to put Anna down in May, and I broke into tears setting up the Christmas tree this week because Anna loved ripping open her presents. :(

She was family, and I miss her so damn much.

Not recently, but...when I was 17 I had to put down a cat that I had had since I was three years old. He had slept in my bed and cuddled with me and followed me around the house for that entire time.

Losing a pet is so awful and so difficult. I'm sorry for your loss, and I send you love and light.

I'm sorry for your loss. *hugs*

My dog died about five and a half years ago, and it still feels painful. I get teary-eyed whenever I even think about him. Even a sad death in a crappy television show can make me sob uncontrollably, because it reminds me of my dog. He was - well, STILL IS - a big part of my life and tbqh I don't think I'll ever get over it. But it does get easier. For me, it took about a year to "recover", but I was able to pull myself together after about a month or two after the death (I could touch his old toys and things and not burst into tears, and I was able to visit his grave).

Like I said, it does get easier, but it can still be painful.

This.

It took years for the hurt to actually turn into just melancholy and sweet memories, but it will happen.

You did the best you could do, OP.

*hugs*

Earlier in the year, yea. It was tough but...I'm usually okay, as long as I don't think about her for long. This is one of those things that will get easier with time, and since it just happened your reaction is completely justified. I'm terribly sorry anon, but I hope you feel better soon. (If you don't though, that's okay too. We all deal with grief differently.) Take care of yourself.

I lost my dog of 14 years in January. I got him when I was 10, so I'd had him longer than I didn't, and it was so crushing to the whole family. My mom and I were legitimately messes for like two months after, and I still get moments of just expecting him to be there when I get home. I found some pictures of him on my computer the other day and got choked up about it.

But it does get better, I promise.

I'm so sorry for your loss.

I haven't lost a pet too recently, but I've lost a few cats over the years, and it's hard. Two years ago, one of my cats became very ill fairly suddenly, and there was nothing we could do for her. It was so sad to see her little cat bed afterward, because she'd loved it. I still miss her, and the other two that passed away, but now it's more fond memories than sadness. For me, I really do feel that it's better to have them for a while and love them than to never have them in your life at all, even though losing them is very painful.

I'm sorry about your dog. I'm sure he knew he was loved.

Sorry for your loss, OP. I'm sorry you had to go through this.

We lost our daddy chinchilla Saturday night. We rescued him, along with his mate and two offspring, about 4 years ago. His death was utterly unexpected and shocking. It's hit all of us hard as a result.

That really sucks. I'm sorry for your loss. *hugs* Earlier this year we lost my mom's dachshund to a mixture of diabetes and a nasty kidney infection. I still get misty-eyed when I think of how endearing she could be in spite of her stubborn, lifelong refusal to be housebroken.

A few months ago I lost my final ferret, Charlie, to old age. It wasn't as heartbreaking as Dixie because he went in his sleep and he'd had a long, happy, treat-filled life with plenty of ankles to attack and things to steal and hide under the sofa. Still, I miss the little guy. He was an awesome ferret.

From the sound of things, I'd say that your dog was lucky to have had a caring, loving person like you as his owner.

Not recently - it's been years now - but it still hurts. We got a dog when I was about ten. She had her flaws, mostly due to insufficient training, but she loved me and I loved her. Living in a difficult family, she was one of the only two members of my family I truly liked. I moved away from home at sixteen, but I missed her and was always happy to see her when I visited.

A few years after that, I got a phone call. Our dog had become suddenly ill and had to be put to sleep. I wasn't told anything about it during those few days. I only found out after she was already gone.

I didn't get to see her for the last time. I never got to say goodbye. I've been wronged in worse ways, but many things haven't made me feel betrayed like that one.

My folks have a new dog now. My mom says he's the best dog ever, and I've seen him and he's cute... but he's not my dog. To me, she will always be the best dog ever. I still miss her, sometimes, and I'm the kind of person who doesn't cry for dead human relatives. Does that make me a bad person?

It doesn't make you a bad person. I didn't cry for my father, or my aunts/uncles, but when I had to put my dog(s) to sleep, I was a mess for...ages.

Anon -

One of my friends' dogs had to be euthanized the other day. I, myself, have had to give the request to my vet to euthanize three of my dogs (Mom did it for two, once due to my age, once due to me having to be at work).

When I think about them, I get misty-eyed. I try to remind myself they were old, or hurting. Sometimes, that works.

It's been almost four years since I've had to make that decision, and one of my three current dogs is getting up there in age. I know I'll have to make that decision again, sometime, probably in the coming year. It's hard, and it's awful, and I know I'll miss her like crazy.

But I'm going to tell you something that's happened to me with three of the dogs I've had to let go - they came back to me. Two of them followed me on vacation, and I spotted them rolling around in a hotel lobby - and they were dogs who'd never even met. I see dog ghosts, sometimes not just my own, but other dogs - a scampering JRT, a Great Dane following a man down the street.

People who don't know me well think I'm nuts for seeing - and speaking to - these dogs I see. I always do. Because they have to be missing someone, too, to come back.
