i feel like if you've read the book it helps you understand the movie. i'd read the book last year and loved it, but was a little disappointed with how much they cut out from it (pretty much everything involving his family and the relationship with his teacher is gone) and was confused at the end. if i hadn't read the book, i feel like i'd have been really confused about what was going on.
